What are students saying about Ontario’s #Bill23? On Friday December 9, @westernsogs organized a large public demonstration on #WesternU’s campus as part of our effort to spread community awareness of the Bill and what it means for the housing and climate crises. A recap 🧵
If you don’t know me, I’m the 1st Sustainability Coordinator at SOGS. I advocate on behalf of grad students’ environmental rights. I’m the Chair of an advisory committee for the City of London dedicated to environmental stewardship & climate action. I’m also working on a PhD!🐦🪟
Two weeks ago, @westernsogs endorsed a letter condemning #Bill23 and educating our membership about what is at stake in Ontario’s housing and climate crises. You can read the statement in full here: sogs.ca/bill-23
Then, on Friday December 9, after #Bill23 received royal ascent, we organized a demonstration on campus that was open to the #ldnont public. It was a cold week and right at the start of exam season, so we weren’t sure how many people would show up…
Well, we were not alone in the cold that afternoon! We had graduate students, undergraduate students, staff, faculty, tons of people and advocacy organizations from off campus. Together we gathered at the top of University College (UC) Hill at Western.
We brought with us a bunch of signs students put together the night before, and other signs were made on the spot. Our messaging focussed on the kinds of information students are motivated by: evidence, truth and facts 🧐 (grad students are good at checking the receipts)
We (SOGS Sustainability Committee) invited representatives in London City Council and the provincial government to attend. Given broad implications for students, we also invited the USC & University administration, but they opted not to appear.
We put out a press release and invited the local media. We were grateful to have the student-run @uwogazette onsite to take pictures and interviews! 📸 in this thread were taken by David Nguyenn
Our demonstration proceeded to march through campus, across the river and over to the university’s front gates, to wave our signs at passing rush-hour traffic. Our chants were accompanied by a wonderful marching band made up of community members! 🥁 #Bill23NotForMe
As the lead organizer, I want to highlight my take-home messages: 1. Many of us recognize NOW is the time for an #OntarioGeneralStrike! We must band together, stop reacting to individual crises, and instead form a unified front to hold our government accountable #EnoughIsEnough
4. We demand that Ontario’s PC government stop telling blatant lies, answer questions directly and provide justification for plans and decisions based in evidence and science. Universities train students to pursue the truth. We must hold government to a similar standard, or else:
5. We urge everyone to continue to share what you know and are concerned about in #Bill23 and other changes imposed by this government. We must continue to apply pressure and prepare for our next opportunity to vote for leadership we need in 3.5 years. Linktr.ee/StopBill23
Thank you to everyone who showed up for our demonstration, and to people everywhere in Ontario and First Nations who are standing up for what they believe in. We will get through this together. Students are here and ready to act for our future and for our only home 🌎

To what extent did @fordnation’s government plan in advance to ram through all these omnibus bills at once, and underspend on public services? What details are hidden in the secret mandate letters, still undisclosed despite legal requirement? 3.5 yrs to go cbc.ca/news/canada/to…
“The Ontario government is refusing to say how many taxpayer-funded hours its lawyers have spent fighting to keep Premier Doug Ford's mandate letters secret, despite being ordered to release the figure to CBC Toronto by the province's privacy commissioner” cbc.ca/news/canada/to…
For comparison, see the 2016 mandate letters that the previous (before Ford) Ontario Premier sent to their cabinet. The letters were disclosed as normal and became part of the public record. Mandate letters outline the key priorities for ON’s ministries. ontario.ca/page/mandate-l…
Wonder how many conservative voters the current Ontario government is alienating with their recent antics. Those are voices I would love to hear more from
The legacy of the Ontario PC party, and their ability to recruit new younger voters, may well depend on the response from their base to current events. Quiet disagreement is fine, but on the outside it just looks like you are complicit
Partisan affiliation should not override morality. If you truly care about the PC party as an institution, the best thing you can do for it at this moment is to share constructive criticism, and leverage your affiliation to stand up for what you believe
I would love to see a coalition of municipalities work together to put pressure on the Ontario government to incorporate sustainable building design into the Ontario Building Code, to replace municipal green standards that have been lost in the midst of a climate emergency.
Maybe this is advocacy that @AMOPolicy@ONBigCityMayors can explore? Without green standards, development can proceed that isn't built to withstand climate change conditions. Ultimately, this will leave municipalities & property owners on the hook for costs of disaster mitigation
🚨Ontarians should write to their MPP to ask for an integrity / privacy commissioner investigation: Did @fordnation breach the oath of the Premier’s office and conflict of interest rules when he privately told developers he would allow them to develop lands in the greenbelt?
Please encourage newcomers to #WesternU to consider voting in the upcoming #ldnont municipal election. Student turnout for these elections is historically low, yet students will be affected by many decisions to be made by the next local government. Also… westerngazette.ca/news/everythin…
If you wanna get informed about the election, check out accounts like @ThrivingLdnOnt & @london_votes. Watch online recordings of debates hosted by @ULLdn to find out how local candidates stack up on issues. There are good summaries available to make your research really simple!
Electing representatives who follow science and base decisions on evidence is an impactful #climateaction we can easily undertake. @CityofLdnOnt declared a climate emergency, but it’s up to the next municipal council to oversee implementation of the Climate Emergency Action Plan
I am disappointed that this petition went nowhere after the federal 🇨🇦government made excuses and didn’t acknowledge the feasibility of reasonable actions we asked for. They claim there isn’t enough evidence to suggest balloon releases are a problem / warrant intervention…
If you are in Canada and want to release tens, hundreds, event thousands of plastic balloons into the sky for your enjoyment, the government response suggests the 🇨🇦 legal system will not stop you. This happens more often than we know - just search balloon release on Twitter
Instead, the government response petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/De… suggests it is up to other levels of government to address pollution associated with balloons. Yet, helium balloons released into the sky cross over municipal or provincial boundaries and produce litter across the country.
