85 years ago today, Japan began a 6-week massacre of over 20,000 Chinese civilians, alongside mass rape, arson and looting, marking one of the worst atrocities in history
"Massacre contests" were held amongst Japanese soldiers, who slaughtered en masse, in ways beyond belief
From door to door, Japanese soldiers searched for women (including children and elderly) to rape and often killed them immediately after through mutilation - by penetrating vaginas with bayonets, long sticks of bamboo, or other objects
Yale est. that 80,000 women were raped
"Never I have heard or read such brutality. Rape! Rape! Rape! We estimate at least 1,000 cases a night and many by day. In case of resistance or anything that seems like disapproval, there is a bayonet stab or a bullet.... People are hysterical..." - Reverend James M. McCallum

Japanese nationalists contend that the death tolls are inflated and the majority killed were resisting Japanese occupation
Japanese history textbooks can still incite heated protests in China
