I’m inside the San Francisco courtroom for David DeDape’s preliminary hearing - the man accused of breaking into Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s home and beating her husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer.

#Here’s what he’s facing:
2/ David DePape is in the courtroom in an orange jumpsuit, with long hair down to his shoulders.

They just played the 911 call made by Paul Pelosi the night of the attack.

@nbcbayarea
3/

***911 call***

Pelosi: I got a problem but he thinks everything is good…

This gentlemen came into my house and he wants to wait for my wife…

He told me not to do anything…

He’s telling me to put the phone down and do what he says…

@nbcbayarea
4/
*911 Call*

(911) What’s his name?
(Man in background) David
(Pelosi) The name is David

(911) Who is David?
(Pelosi) I don’t know.

(Man in background) I’m a friend of theirs
(Pelosi) He says he’s a friend but…

(911) But you don’t know who he is?
(Pelosi) No ma’am.
5/ SFPD officer currently testifying that he and his partner knew it was Pelosi’s house before they knocked the door.
6/ SFPD officer testified his partner knocked door of Pelosi home, then door opened from inside, so officers did not open door, which contradicts DOJ indictment filed on 11/9/22, which said cops opened door.

We 1st reported on this discrepancy last month
nbcbayarea.com/investigations…
7/ SFPD officer testified that when door opened, both DePape and Pelosi could be seen holding the same hammer.

He said when officers asked him to drop the hammer, DePape said “no.”

@nbcbayarea
8/
SFPD officer describes hammer as a “metal hammer.”

“In one motion, he raised [hammer] above his head and lunged and swung the hammer at Mr. Pelosi.”

@nbcbayarea
9/ Prosecutor just had officer put on gloves and open sealed envelope that contained hammer. Prosecutor asked officer to identify if that appeared to be the same hammer used in the attack. Officer said yes.
10/ San Francisco Police Officer Kyle Cagney still testifying:

“When we attempted to put the suspect in handcuffs, Mr. Pelosi was laying face down…unconscious.”

He said Pelosi was bleeding “a lot…there was a pool of blood.”

@nbcbayarea
#Depape #PaulPelosi #Pelosi
11/ Court just played police body camera video night of Pelosi attack. The tv monitor is facing the SFPD officer on the stand, so most of us in court couldn’t see the video, but could hear audio.

I used my stopwatch to time out events as they unfolded:
@nbcbayarea
12/

Timing based on police body camera audio:

:00
Officers knock door of Pelosi home

:20
(door opens)
(Officer) Hi how you doing?
(Officer) What’s going on man?
(Man) He’s good.

:30
(Officer) Drop the hammer

:34
(Depape strikes Pelosi with hammer)
13/ Now an SFPD investigator is on the stand, who interviewed Paul Pelosi on Oct. 30 about the attack.

“He said this man was in his room and woke him up. He was startled and a little groggy…

He asked him where’s Nancy, where’s Nancy…”

@nbcbayarea #Pelosi #Depape
14/ SFPD investigator who interviewed Paul Pelosi:

“[Paul Pelosi] told [David DePape] she is in Washington right now, and that she’d be back in a couple of days.

[Paul Pelosi] said [David DePape] was holding a hammer in one hand a bunch of plastic zip cords in the other hand.”
15/

(Prosecutor) Did Mr. Pelosi feel like he was free to leave the house?

(SFPD investigator) He said hell no.

(Prosecutor) Did he ever threaten Mr. Pelosi?

(SFPD investigator) Yes. He kept telling Mr. Pelosi that he could take him out.
16/
Court is playing recorded interview between SFPD investigator and accused suspect David DePape that took place on 10/28/22:

“I’m not trying to get away with this. I know what I did.”
- DePape

#Pelosi #DePape
17/
According to SFPD investigator on the stand, when she asked DePape what his intention was in going to Pelosi home, DePape said he wanted to hold Nancy Pelosi “hostage” and “talk with her.”

He said if she “told the truth” he would “let her go.”

#Pelosi #DePape
@nbcbayarea
18/

When SFPD investigator on stand is questioned whether David DePape was prepared to go on a “suicide mission” at Pelosi home, she said “yes,” adding…

“[DePape] mentioned that if officers had shot him they better not miss and he was ready for that.”

1/ San Francisco wants to open “supervised injection sites,” where people can use illegal drugs under care of trained staff.

Goal is reduce overdose deaths, but fed. govt deems sites illegal.

Even at state level, Gov. Newsom vetoed plan to open sites on trial basis.
@nbcbayarea
2/ What do supervised injection sites look like and how do they work?

They’ve been utilized for decades abroad, so a couple of years ago, we traveled to Vancouver to see the sites for ourselves:
3/ How do drug users describe the impact of supervised injection sites?

Listen to these two emotional interviews:

Stephanie Peterson used a supervised injection site in Canada.

Tiffany Falstich, homeless and addicted to heroin, spoke about her hope for a similar center in SF.

#Scoop: Two major law enforcement agencies investigating #Pelosi attack can't agree on who opened the door once San Francisco police arrived:

Dept. of Justice:
"The 2 officers opened the door..."

SF DA's Office:
"Mr. Pelosi opened the door with his left hand..."
@nbcbayarea
2/
A source familiar w/ the investigation, who personally watched the police body camera video, tells us SF DA's office got it right, adding that the video shows police knocking the door, then backing away. Door then opens from the inside and you can see Paul Pelosi opening it.
3/
Does who opened the door matter? We have no reason to believe it does, but with so many conspiracy theories already swirling online, contradicting stories from investigators are only fueling falsehoods.
DOJ & DA's office did not respond to our request for comment.

1/ San Francisco DA Brooke Jenkins sat down w/ us for a wide-ringing, one-on-one interview, her first since the election.
We spoke about the criticism she's facing, the Paul Pelosi attack, & her plans to end "lawlessness."

Let's break it down.
@nbcbayarea
2/ Jenkins says as DA, "all crime" is now considered illegal in San Francisco.

She says her predecessor Chesa Boudin (recalled by voters in June) ordered staff not to pursue charges for quality of life crimes (i.e. graffiti), resisting arrest, & certain assaults against cops.
3/ We contacted former District Attorney Chesa Boudin to get his response to Jenkins' criticism of his office.

I reached him by phone.

He answered.

I identified myself.

Then, Boudin hung up.

#BREAKING 🧵
1/ San Francisco District Attorney @BrookeJenkinsSF releases new details about attack on Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband, Paul Pelosi.

She says David Depape broke a glass door to get into the Pelosi's SF home, went to 2nd floor to find Paul Pelosi sleeping in bed.
2/ Charges against Depape include attempted murder, residential burglary, assault w/ a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder as well as threats to a public official and their family.

DA says Depape woke up Paul Pelosi and wanted to know where his wife was.
3/ Mr. Pelosi was wearing a "loose-fitting pajama shirt & boxer shorts" when he was forced to get out of bed. He tried to access a phone in his home elevator, but Depape is accused of blocking him. Later, Pelosi asked to use bathroom and was able to call 911 with his cell phone.

1/ California's Supt. of Education @TonyThurmond took swift action after our investigation exposed how few schools are equipped to reverse deadly drug overdoses on campus.

Teen overdose deaths in California recently spiked to a nation-wide high.

🧵:
@EdWriters
@nbcbayarea
2/ An overdose antidote, known as Narcan/naloxone, can bring people back to life. It's a nasal spray & the CA legislature first gave schools the power to use it on students 6 years ago. The state even offers Narcan kits for free, but we learned few schools have them on campus.
3/ We surveyed 10 largest school districts in #SanFrancisco Bay Area, home to nearly 500 schools and 320,000 students.
We learned:
- students have suffered overdoses at at least 40% of those school districts
- only 3% high schools have Narcan on campus; 0 middle & elem. schools.

🧵 Kate Chatfield, the Chief of Staff for San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin, is now blocking credentialed journalists on Twitter.
She has used the social media platform in her capacity as a government official, so it’s unclear what she doesn’t want reporters to see.
1/ Image
Just a few weeks ago, the DA’s office hired a “transparency lawyer” to combat criticism over a perceived lack of transparency. Kate Chatfield herself praised the move, telling SF Standard it “reflects our continued commitment to transparency.”
Now she’s blocking reporters?🤔
2/ Image
When public servants agree to take on the responsibility of doing the people’s work – there must be transparency.

Sure, it’s not convenient nor is it self-serving, but it’s necessary. You deserve it.

After all, it’s your tax dollars paying the salaries of these officials.
