John Piotti: @USDA launched a truly innovative program, focused on #ClimateSmartCommodities. Then, Congress passed the #InflationReductionAct, which is in many ways a climate bill and includes $20B to enhance conservation programs. Where are these efforts headed? #FreeRangeAFT
AFT was awarded a $30 million @USDA Partnership for Climate-Smart Commodities on transitioning to climate-neutral beef and is a partner on 3 more CSCPs. Learn more about our #climate initiative: bit.ly/3Wfvdjf #climatesmartcommodities
.@SecVilsack: The #InflationReductionAct supports cover crops, rotational grazing, waste mgmt, etc. The goal is to continue to support the practices we know work. Climate-Smart Commodities will give us data points & understanding of what moves the dial.
.@SecVilsack on #foodsystemtransformation: We learned during the pandemic that our food system wasn’t resilient, so we are putting effort into local and regional food centers. There are 50 support programs that support local and regional food systems in the US.

John Piotti: It’s essential that we increase our #solar energy production. The DOE estimates up to 90% of the 10M acres of new solar development that is likely by 2030 could be sited on farmland adding to the loss of #farmland that is already too great. #FreeRangeAFT
For #solar energy to succeed, it needs to co-exist with #agriculture. When combined with threats from sprawl and low-density development—which are highlighted in AFT’s #FarmsUnderThreat report—the conversion of ag land for non-agricultural uses is a real concern. #FreeRangeAFT
We have to be careful here, and not replace one form of solar energy production for another, namely, photosynthesis. Simply put, we need to BOTH increase #solar production and retain our farmland, especially our most productive, versatile, and resilient #farmland. #FreeRangeAFT
