1) It was only a few weeks ago various pundits and news publications in the United States predicted the U.S. would be spared a resurgence in #pandemic hospitalizations. Sadly, they turned out to be wrong, with intensive-care stays for #COVID now at the highest point in 4 months.
2) Note the U.S. is likely only at the start of this resurgence in hospitalizations, yet some hospitals are already overwhelmed amid the most virulent flu epidemic in more than a decade. A New Mexico hospital closed its parking lot to pitch a tent to absorb an influx of patients.
3) Dr. Eric Topol, a U.S. #COVID expert who has been tracking the #pandemic assiduously since the beginning, expressed concern in a tweet about the potential impact of this latest resurgence in hospitalizations on seniors.
4) Note Topol warns this rebound is poised to overtake the peak of the U.S.'s BA.5 #Omicron wave several months ago because of low vaccine booster uptake and few public health protections in place. One need only look to France to see what may happen next.
5) It's a mistake to view this #pandemic in isolation. The U.S. is now in a COVID-Influenza #Syndemic, or "aggregation of two or more concurrent...epidemics or disease clusters in a population with biological interactions, which exacerbate the prognosis and burden of disease."
6) A Lancet study warned in April "as public health restrictions are lifted,...virus co-infections are more likely to occur during future winters. It concluded that "SARS-CoV-2 co-infections with influenza viruses were...significantly associated with increased odds of death."
7) The Lancet study collected hospitalizations data in the U.K. from February 2020 to December 2021, when flu activity was much lower amid lockdowns and other #pandemic restrictions. In contrast, the flu season in the U.S. is shaping up to be the worst in more than a decade.
8) North of the border, Quebec is in the midst of a resurgence of #COVID hospitalizations and a flu epidemic, too. Yet public health director Luc Boileau has ruled out reinstating public health protections beyond urging people to be more "prudent."
9) A lack of measures prevails in the U.S., too. The only concrete action the Biden administration has taken is to resume a free #COVID home test program. Meanwhile, the U.S. recorded 2,981 #pandemic fatalities in the first week of December, the first such increase since August.
10) And so as the #pandemic approaches its third anniversary early next year, improvisation continues by government authorities around the world. Why have we learned so few lessons from this #COVID crisis? Please, mask up and get your shots. End of thread.

1) Breaking: Quebec on Wednesday reported 2,081 hospitalizations for and with #COVID, the highest level in two months. Of that number, 14 children under the age of 10 are hospitalized while testing positive for SARS-CoV-2.
2) Without any doubt, the #Omicron subvariant BQ.1.1 is driving the latest resurgence of #COVID hospitalizations in Quebec. This viral strain has been described as having "marked immune-evasive properties." Its prevalence in Quebec is now 48%, up from 11.7% six weeks earlier. Image
3) It would appear this Omicron subvariant is the type of "game-changer" that Quebec's chief public health officer seemed to suggest a few weeks ago should warrant new measures to protect the public. We'll find out at Dr. Luc Boileau's 1 p.m. press conference today if that's so.

Voir ci-dessous. Image

1) For nearly 2 weeks, one of Canada's preeminent public health researchers has been hacked out of his Twitter account. He's contacted #TwitterSupport repeatedly, to no avail. In this thread, I write about the plight of Timothy Caulfield and other scientists on this platform.
2) Caulfield, author of several bestsellers with more than 83,000 Twitter followers at one point, has served as a guiding light during the #pandemic, fighting misinformation about vaccines, among other topics. But since @elonmusk took over Twitter, things have gone south for him.
3) His Twitter account (@CaulfieldTim) was hacked Dec. 7. The next day, I received a message from a phisher purporting to be a Timothy Caulfield of Twitter's "trust and safety team" — when my account got hacked. But I regained my account Monday. Caulfield is still locked out.

1) Breaking: Quebec on Tuesday reported 2,021 hospitalizations with and for #COVID, the highest tally in nearly two months. Government projections are also warning of a continued increase in the weeks to come.
2) A reliable indicator of the severity of Quebec's latest #pandemic wave (it's the 8th or 9th, depending on how you assess things) are intensive-care stays just for #COVID. It's still relatively low at 36, but it's inching up. On Dec. 1, for example, it was only 23.
3) Meanwhile, Quebec's public health institute on Tuesday released #COVID hospitalization projections based partly on the rising prevalence of the more contagious #Omicron subvariants, BQ.1 and BQ.1.1. They show a peak at the beginning of January for the Greater Montreal Region.

1) Quebec on Monday reported 3,157 Influenza A cases in the week ending Dec. 10 — a decrease of 5 per cent from the week before, suggesting the earlier-than-expected flu epidemic may have peaked in this province. But a smattering of Influenza B cases ticked up from 8 to 18.
2) Quebec also observed for the first time a drop in Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infections, which have hit children hard and caused massive overcrowding in pediatric emergency rooms. There were 517 RSV cases in the week ending Dec. 10, down from 631 the week before.
3) As for #COVID hospitalizations, we won't know until Tuesday, which is typically when the health ministry resumes reporting numbers. However, my La Presse colleague @PaNormandin is reporting a noticeable increase in positive SARS-CoV-2 results. Please see the chart below.

1) More and more reports are emerging of Twitter's security vulnerabilities since @elonmusk's takeover of the social media platform a few weeks ago, as well as efforts to hack the accounts of certified journalists. In this thread, I will survey how unsafe Twitter has become.
2) Since @elonmusk's acquisition of Twitter, much of the public's attention has been focused on his mercurial decisions and the increasing lack of content moderation — both legitimate concerns. But security vulnerabilities and breaches are not getting the attention they deserve.
3) As @elonmusk gives priority to the release of his so-called Twitter Files, nefarious actors are working behind the scenes to take advantage of the fact that the social media platform has lost two-thirds of its employees so they can exploit vulnerabilities in its software.
