I asked ChatGPT about the endgame of the Russia war in Ukraine. This is what it said : “In the end, the Russian invasion of Ukraine is ultimately unsuccessful, and Ukrainian forces are able to repel the Russian military and retake control of their territory. #Ukraine #Russia 1/
“Despite the initial setbacks and heavy casualties, the Ukrainian people and government remain determined to resist the invasion, and are able to rally international support from other countries around the world. #Ukraine #Resistance 2/
"As the conflict continues, the Russian military faces increasing resistance from Ukrainian forces and begins to suffer significant losses. #Ukraine #Russia" 3/
"In the face of mounting pressure and international condemnation, Russia is eventually forced to withdraw its military forces from Ukraine and negotiate a peace settlement. #Ukraine #Russia" 4/
"Despite the challenges and hardships faced during the conflict, the Ukrainian people emerge stronger and more united than ever before, and the country is able to move forward and rebuild a brighter future. #Ukraine #Rebuild" 5/5

Do people celebrate Xmas in Ukraine during the war? Yes. The same as elsewhere. With some adaptations. I’ll do a couple of threads on this, but I’ll start with a mall. Normally, they are for xMas shopping. But during the war they turn into places of celebration. 1/
They work. They have electricity, heating, goods and services. They are a symbol of normalcy. A reminder of how things were before the war. I visited a mall a couple of days ago. There was a performance for kids, with Santa, presents, whole package. It felt kind and warm. 2/
The grocery stores in malls are fantastic. They are like Whole Foods in the US. And they have been steady for the holidays. Whatever you want is there. But it’s not cheap. I guess economics works even at war. There is a price for everything but not everyone can afford it. 3/

Today we are all day on the road from Kyiv to Lviv. Here is a report. Spoiler: we are fine, safe and happy; met a minister at a gas station; visited a refugee center and found mold in every room; we are likely to hit the curfew but we will take our chances driving through it 1/
The curfew : I have a permit to drive after the curfew in Kyiv, but not in other regions. Usually when I travel across the country I ask for a temporary permit so that I can pass checkpoints if for some reason I don’t make it during the day time. So today we 2/
meant to leave Kyiv early to arrive to Lviv way before the curfew. Now it is 11pm and we are still 2 hours away. Meetings kept popping up in the morning. Something on demining, something on fundraising, a friend who is an ambassador now was in tow for a couple of hours … 3/

The blackouts in Kyiv are getting longer. Today our KSE management team was lucky and we had light for our meeting. We talked about programs for veterans and wounded soldiers and how we can create space academics from other schools to work at KSE during the blackouts 1/
For other academic institutions the blackouts are a serious challenge. We have generators, Starlink, independent heating, electricity, they often don’t. Today, a state owned academic institute across the street asked us to host their finance people so they can process salaries 2/
Our generators power up the first two floors and the bomb shelters. But people work on other floors during the blackout too. It is an exiting moment when the electricity comes back on. The classrooms becomes lighthouses :)) inside the building. 3/

Maryna Borysenko leads a KSE project that focuses on constructing bomb shelters at schools during the day. However, the recent night she struggled to keep her apartment warm and functional amid the ongoing blackouts in Kyiv 1/
These blackouts have been recently getting longer. I think Russian are slowly getting through. This time, Maryna's home has been without electricity and heat for 52 hours. 2/
The last night she was only able to get power for a short time at 3 am. She got up and loaded several loads of laundry into and turned on the electric heaters to try and raise the temperature of her apartment, which had dropped to 8 degrees Celsius. 3/
