One year ago today I woke up feeling absolutely dreadful. I’d gone for a 5k run the day before and little did I know that it would precipitate the debilitating #LongCovid that I’ve endured for the last year. I haven’t had ONE good day since then. 1/2
I’ve been either stuck in bed or at home with crushing symptoms. I’ve been diagnosed with #POTS meaning I can barely stand up. 2022 has been an awful year. But the #LongCovid and #MECFS Twitter community has been amazing. We all deserve a better 2023! 2/2
#LongCovid is impacting the lives of >2 million people in the UK. Many have had their lives completely ruined and more are being affected every day. We need help
How healthy was I before #LongCovid? Healthy enough to be able to ride >100 miles solo in the French Alps with >4,000m of elevation gain in a day. No one is safe from this disease
In 2010 I fractured my collarbone badly in a cycling accident. It was broken into 4 pieces after I lost my front wheel to black ice on a ride home from work one late winter’s evening 1/n
I waited a week for surgery to put it back together, then a further 6 weeks for it to heal. I still vividly remember the pain of the bone splitting 2/n
The exhaustion after picking myself up, walking home and carrying my bike up a flight of stairs (foolishly) 3/n
I had a relatively busy Thursday after Wednesday’s HBOT session. Three short trips out of the house: the first to the supermarket, the second to the drs for a routine blood test and the third to go see my daughter for a couple of hours.
This level of activity is huge compared to where I was a couple of months ago… which was largely bed/sofa bound.
I’m still semi-struggling my way through this increase in activity levels with symptoms, but I’m not getting any PEM/PESE like before (except for Monday!) and am pacing carefully in between.
This 🧵 will be updated with my #longcovid HBOT data
Baseline PM active stand test:
Resting HR: 43
Max HR: 84
Delta: 41
I have #longcovid#POTS. Medication has taken the edge off my HR spikes, but the aftermath of this simple test was pretty gruelling. The AM baseline test will be interesting.
Baseline step count (recorded on iPhone). Shocking how few steps I take! Before #longcovid I walked and cycled everywhere 😞
Tomorrow I start HBOT in an attempt to get some relief from the debilitating #longcovid symptoms I’ve been experiencing since being infected with #COVID19 in December 2021. This 🧵 will journal my experience 1/n
There are no treatments for #longcovid. Let that sink in. A debilitating illness (similar to #MECFS) that can affect anyone after a #COVID19 infection, with no cure. Therefore those of us suffering with it are on our own as we desperately search for ways to get our health back 2/n
To quantify progress I will:
1) Record my step count
2) Track hours asleep
3) Record heart rate variability during an active stand test at the same time 2x/day
4) Post max bench press and squat load 1x per week (kidding, I can barely get out of the house right now)
