👉🏻 #TCU is not your typical 3-High attack

Let me explain...

#ArtofX ⤵️
The Horned Frogs have THE lowest blitz rates in CFB at 11.6%, & the second lowest stunt rate at 9% (PFF).

They also deviate from the coverage norm, based in Qtrs rather than the typical C2.

#ArtofX ⤵️
One major way #TCU changes its structure is by dropping the MS into the overhang position.

Below, you can see that the Frogs have shifted the LBs to the nub & slid the MS down into the "Ni."

To the "stack," the Frogs are running C2 & away MEG Qtrs.

#ArtofX ⤵️
Teams use these alignments to clear the MOF

In the clip, we see #Michigan use the exact same formation as the image prior

TCU decides to stay in a 3-Hi shell, & the Wolverines QB can throw his WR open for a TD

Look for similar formations from #Georgia as well

#ArtofX
Nub formations (or Wings) are a typical attack on a 3-Hi system because it is constantly super-rotated

#TCU solves this issue w/ their "down" call

Below, I illustrate the gap fits & coverage

Stack = C2 (Cloud) & 2 WRs = Qtrs (Sky)

#ArtofX ⤵️
Again, #Michigan used similar formations to get #TCU into a bind with coverage

Below, the Wolverines use an Unbal Wing set to expose the MOF & run a Dbl Post concept

PA brings the C2 DBs into the box & the QB throws his WR open for a big play

#ArtofX ⤵️
The clip below illustrates how #Georgia can isolate the Slot on the Frogs' Safeties

The look from the Buckeyes is similar to the "down" call by #TCU & the Bulldogs utilize a 12p Unbal formation

#ArtofX ⤵️
.#Georgia utilized 2 TE sets against #OhioState's Hybrid defense, & will do the same against #TCU

Here is a look at an Unbal weak-side run

Something the Frogs are sure to see in the Championship game

#ArtofX ⤵️
Here is a good ex of #TCU's standard coverage

Again, the Wolverines attack with a Nub formation which #TCU runs C2 against

Versus 3 WRs, the secondary plays a loose version of what I call Special (Stubbie)

#ArtofX ⤵️
One change up for #TCU to 3 WR formations is to run a "roll" concept & let the CB take the flat

In reality, it creates a traditional BOX coverage (Qtrs) over the 3 WRs, but w/ a different presentation & leverage

To the x1 side, the Frogs run inverted Qtrs (Slice)
#ArtofX ⤵️
This clip illustrates a standard run fit for the defense, & another ex of using the "down" adjustment to max out numbers in the box

The quick motion makes the set a 3-back formation, which allows the Frogs to spin to 1-Hi, but w/ Qtrs principles

#ArtofX ⤵️
When the #Frogs do blitz, it is usually some kind of 5-man pressure

Below is a good look at an ILB + CB FZ path to attack the Nub side of the Wolverines' set

#ArtofX ⤵️
Hopefully, you can see that #TCU is not your typical 3-Hi system & is well-versed w/ answers for how teams attack

#Georgia utilizes a 2 TE attack & will need to find ways to get a vertical run game

One area to look at is how often they run Bennett on designed runs

#ArtofX ⤵️
The national championship is an intriguing matchup of contrasting styles - one that should be entertaining

Pundits will tell you it's 'shell' coverage, but it's more nuanced than that...
We've now hit the point where the pendulum swings back.

Football has (forever) had a natural cycle.

Offenses start to spread out; passing becomes more explosive.

Defenses adjust by putting lighter players on the field to match the space.

Offenses predictably run the ball.
Running the ball not only slows the game down but requires muscle.

Offenses shift to heavier personnel.

Light (Nickel) defenses are caught in the middle; they still have to defend the pass but are getting hammered in the run game.

The difference in this iteration is analytics.

Michigan ran one simple scheme that wreaked havoc on the Alabama run game:

A Ni 5-man pressure...

#ArtofX | ⤵️ Image
In the 1st Half, anytime Bama used Across Motion, the Wolverines blitzed the edge.

DC Jesse Minter did a good job changing up the entry points.

Here, the Ni is set to the field & inserts once the WR motions to his side.

The short stunt by the DE leads to a sack.

#ArtofX | ⤵️
The Tide goes FIB again & this time, Michigan travels the Ni.

The WR motions across to the field & the Ni blitzes off the edge.

Bama runs a same-side wind-back Counter & no one can leverage the blitz.

Everyone needs to understand the Dunning-Kruger Effect because it affects ALL of us.

Let me be the 1st to admit I've been to "Mount Stupid" on multiple occasions...

#ArtofX x #DoBetter 🌱 Image
When we 1st learn something, we ride this quick high: "Look at me; I'm a genius!"

This tends to happen when we are young or learning something new, & we completely misjudge our own competency

The image calls this the "Peak of 'Mount Stupid.'"

#ArtofX x #DoBetter
Life has a funny way of humbling even the most confident (or arrogant) of us all.

From the "peak," we meet either a major loss or someone much smarter than us & we collapse:

"Bro, I'm an idiot."

But this is where a person can make or break it...

Miss State did a great job neutralizing the high-powered run game of Ole Miss

The Bulldogs base from a 3-3-5 that stems from the SDSU Aztec defenses of Rocky Long

Here are 5⃣ concepts from their hybrid defense...

#ArtofX | ⤵️
1) Being able to bounce from an odd to an even front is important when trying to keep the offense guessing in the run game

MSU is aligned in their 4-2-5 against Ole Miss' 2-back unbalanced - a fluid front w/ the Heavy-5 taking the Dive & the ILB snapping down for the QB

#ArtofX
Gap exchanges are important when defending ZN Read plays from a 4-down front

The Heavy-5 works through the hip of the OT, working the heel-line

The ILB snaps down to the LOS, staying tight off the DEs hip & leveraging the QB

A lot has been made about the #Rams "soft" zone coverage & how it has led to struggles in the 1st half of the season

Let's take a look...

#ArtofX x #NFL
First, let's put some context to this:

The #Rams are a Cover 3 based defense

They run a variation of Cover 3 on about 59% of their snaps

Cover 3, played w/ ZN CBs can leave a defense susceptible to underneath throws, especially to the outside flats

#ArtofX x #NFL ⤵️
In reality, the #Rams' D is not playing *that* poorly

@fboutsiders has them w/ a DVOA that ranks 13th overall, 4th against the run, & 19th against the pass

According to @espn, LAR is 3rd in Pass rush win rate

👉🏻 So, yes, coverage *is* the issue

#ArtofX x #NFL ⤵️
