👉🏻 #TCU is not your typical 3-High attack

Let me explain...

#ArtofX ⤵️
The Horned Frogs have THE lowest blitz rates in CFB at 11.6%, & the second lowest stunt rate at 9% (PFF).

They also deviate from the coverage norm, based in Qtrs rather than the typical C2.

#ArtofX ⤵️
One major way #TCU changes its structure is by dropping the MS into the overhang position.

Below, you can see that the Frogs have shifted the LBs to the nub & slid the MS down into the "Ni."

To the "stack," the Frogs are running C2 & away MEG Qtrs.

In what has to be one of history's greatest examples of missing the forest for the trees, Russians have been protesting outside the US embassy in Moscow complaining that US weapons are wounding and maiming Russians.

The fact that the Russians have to be in Ukraine to be killed and maimed seems to have been completely missed. Though in truth it's just another example of Russian imperial/colonialism as a mindset that has filtered down to the lowest levels of society. They presume the
right to act as they see fit anywhere they can because only nations able to act where and how they want are truly sovereign and all others are either prizes to be won or vassals to be defended from other sovereign states. I would not at all be surprised if Russian maps only

Ok, here we go on a thread relating to the science and decisions behind ep 3 (FRESHWATER) of #PrehistoricPlanet , our new @AppleTVPlus @bbcstudios series devoted to Late #Cretaceous life. Here we go... #dinosaurs #pterosaurs #plesiosaurs #frogs
Freshwater kicks off in north-east Asia (a location consistent with the geology, climate and animals we show) with a spectacular waterfall connected to canyons. Juvenile #pterosaurs - they're young #azhdarchids - have gathered here to roost... #PrehistoricPlanet
We know essentially nothing of the roosting or resting habits of #azhdarchids but see it as likely that they would have gathered in numbers (fossil evidence does show that they were social) in places that predators couldn't easily get to. Hat-tip to discussion with @MarkWitton ..

For the return of the #UNMBioblog after our year hiatus, I chose to write about the negative consequences for cats, humans, and #wildlife when we allow #cats to roam freely. I couldn't help myself with the punny title.
unm-bioblog.blogspot.com/2021/09/catast…
I was inspired to write this blog after I witnessed my neighbor's outdoor pet #cat killed a #bird under my feeder. A heated argument ensued. I know nothing has changed because I still scare him out of my backyard. I've counted 9 different cats in my backyard, here is one
I am a paradoxical #catlover, which stems from my #science & #ornithology career. I know how cute it is for my own #cat to frolic in flowers but I understand how dangerous it is for #cats, human #health, & #wildlife when cats roam #CatsOfTwitter #Caturday #catsofinstagram

In 2019, a population of Booroolong #frogs was rescued & translocated to Taronga for temporary holding in light of devastating impacts on its environment following prolonged drought & approaching Black Summer #bushfires zooaquarium.org.au/public/Public/… #SavingOurSpecies #ScienceWeek Image
Time was of the essence! These #frogs live only 3-4 years & were all adults on arrival at Taronga. These critical but ageing founders possess unique genes necessary for their species to adapt and survive in an ever-changing environment. Image
Cryopreserving sperm can be stored indefinitely, and so we can ensure that the #GeneticDiversity of wild populations is retained by helping these precious males produce offspring. Look at the frog sperm here!

#GeneticDiversity within #wildlife populations relates to long-term survival. Genes affect many things, including body size, #disease, tolerance of temperature extremes, all of which can be important for #CoralReef systems. #Coral #RRAP

Right now, across eastern #Australia, #frogs are croaking it in large numbers – and again it’s the ARWH that are hopping up to the agar plate to find out what’s going on... #WildlifeHealth #ScienceWeek theconversation.com/dead-shrivelle… @jodirowley @KarrieARose @FrogIDAus #FrogID @austmus
There's a reason the humble #frog is ARWH's unofficial mascot. #Amphibians are valuable #IndicatorSpecies – being highly susceptible to environmental toxins & many pathogens (parasitic, bacterial, viral & fungal) - & right now they're indicating that something is seriously wrong
We are currently in an unusual #MassMortality event for #frogs, and Taronga's AWRH is right at the forefront of figuring out what is going on.

Five years ago today, USFWS banned 201 species of #salamanders from entering the US to prevent a #chytrid extinction crisis (see here: fws.gov/injuriouswildl…) Unfortunately #frogs can also carry this pathogen & their door remains wide open: nationalgeographic.com/animals/2020/0… #WildlifeTrade
As a freelance #WildlifeTrade scientist, my work integrates #science & policy to help reduce potential harm trade may cause. The example above shows the dangers that occur when government laws & policies don't keep up with scientific progress (2/N) @NatGeo #nature #OneHealth Image
After @USFWS enacted the 2016 #WildlifeTrade restriction to help keep this deadly fungus out of the US, it was found that frogs can also carry this "#salamander" pathogen. Thus #frogs might be carrying 2 species of #chytrid into the US (see brill.com/view/journals/…) #SciComm (3/N) Image

This is INCREDIBLE!

Did you know that, in 2015, Brazilian biologists have discovered the world's 1st #venomous #frog?

Learn more:

bit.ly/2KXtLiW
Several species of #frogs are #poisonous, but until 2015 none have been shown to be #venomous - that is injecting a #toxin into their host.

The venom of a Brazilian hylid species can be 25 times as potent as that of the deadly pit #viper!

With #Halloween approaching, what haunts you? I often worry about how quickly #animals are going extinct, and especially #frogs. Here's some of the ways your support can help me prevent then from becoming #environmental ghosts: patreon.com/MyFrogCroaked #FridayFeeling #FrogFriday
Did you know? Many baby #frogs (tadpoles) act as “river lawn mowers” by grazing on algae and plant material that falls into rivers. Their presence helps protect clean water which people and #wildlife both depend on. #FrogFriday
Also, #frogs may help control the spread of human #diseases spread by #insects, like #malaria, dengue & Zika. The tadpoles of some frog species are carnivorous & kill mosquito eggs & larvae. Keeping frogs healthy can help keep people healthy too patreon.com/MyFrogCroaked #OneHealth

Today the #HerpFall2019 class might surpass last year’s class for total # of #amphibians & #reptiles found during #fieldwork 🤞🏼

My target species to add to their list today? ⭐️ Spring peepers ⭐️
I haven’t seen or heard that species since moving to Minnesota.
🤞🏼 🐸 🤞🏼 Image
We got sooo many spring peepers! Recent metamorphs about 1 cm long and a couple of adults.

Also...am I crazy or are they calling in this video? I ask if I’m crazy bc it’s out of season. Have heard gray tree frogs call out of season but not peepers

#HerpFall2019 students will check traps & learn about #fieldwork notes & disinfection protocols tomorrow!

Hoping the #herp gods look kindly upon us & fill our hoop nets, minnow traps, & cover objects with critters!

Stay tuned! (All wrk w/appropriate permits) Image
‘Twas a good day in #HerpFall2019 !

Turned up 7 species in central MN during #fieldwork today!

Highlights: a feisty female painted #turtle , & SO MANY blue spotted #salamanders , boreal chorus #frogs , & wood frogs.

I think it’ll be a fun year 😊
Here’s the class posing next to a statue of a painted turtle (that you can hardly see 😆...we’ll get better at team pics) Image

Out of curiosity, what is the #herpetology Twitter take on ordering #herps (#amphibians or #reptiles ) for dissection in classes from companies like Carolina or others?

#PlzRT & comment below
My current vote: uncertain leaning towards being against it.

Primarily bc I can't always confirm where the animals are sourced from. Are they farmed (perhaps the case for bull #frogs but prob not for other #amphibians or for non- #turtles )? If not, is take sustainable?
Update: I asked & Carolina responded! They source their Ambystoma from the bait industry.

#Fieldwork yesterday & today yielded several highlights:

A dozen blue spotted #salamander #larvae , plus one dead in a trap (with a massive belastomatid insect [aka "toe biter"]).

These larvae are part of a student's project, which he'll be presenting @MWPARC this August! Image
Plus metamorphosing or recently metamorphosed #amphibians of a few different species! (It's that time of the year in central #Minnesota )

In some spots the ground was littered with tiny wood #frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) metamorphs. You can see this one's remaining tail nubbin. ImageImage
And right as I was reminding us to "keep an eye out for metamorphosing #toads" I came across this American toadlet (Anaxyrus americanus) Image

Fun take on the #biology of the Demogorgon on #StrangerThings !

Demogorgons develop front limbs first. Interestingly, that’s how some #salamanders develop too!

1/4
#Salamanders in the family #Ambystoma (aka mole salamanders) develop their front limbs first as well!

Here is a young marbled salamander #larva showing off its front limbs & frilly external gills. Image
But for #frogs we see the back limbs developing first.

Cool #FrogFacts :

The back legs are visible as they develop on a #tadpole , but the front are hidden under a layer of skin (the operculum).

As the tadpole develops, they BURST out through the skin!

Aliens style 😉

Happy day listening to #frogs frolic. Boreal chorus, gray tree, and American #toads were calling in force!
Saw several amplectant amorous Anaxyrus americanus (American toads) & the fruits of their labors

(Alliteration is #toad -ally awesome)
And hubby spotted a painted turtle chilling in the shallows.

#Minnesota #herp #fieldwork thread:

Spent yesterday afternoon with an undergrad researcher (Alex) hoping to find breeding blue-spotted #salamanders

Here's one of the ponds where we've got traps out. 🤞🤞🤞
Didn't see any sally activity, but other #amphibians were active! Image
The three ponds we are trapping for #salamanders had *deafening* choruses of boreal chorus frogs (Pseudacris maculata).

Here's male chorus #frog . You can't see it in the pic, but the skin of their throats turns yellow when they've been calling. Image
Alex's first wood #frog catch of the season!

Wood frog males were calling while supported by submerged, dead grasses in another pond we checked for #salamanders . Image

#Fieldwork Friday! Went out with ugrad to scout potential blue spotted #salamander habitat.

Ponds are thawing, but still a good bit of ice & snow in central MN. ImageImageImage
No #frogs calling yet, and much of ground still frozen. But it feels close! #Arthropods like beetles & spiders are out and about. And saw my first live & dead Ring-necked pheasants!

Guessing this one was farmed? Image
@FieldEcology - maybe calling & activity by next week? Listened hard but no chorus or wood frogs, or peepers at these ponds or those we passed while driving.

Our plan is to keep having #FieldworkFriday , will keep you posted!

(I may be sneaking out more frequently, too🙃)

Acclimating a new office buddy! Another long, slender, gray tube of an #amphibian - the #caecilian !

(It and Perry the #amphiuma will be neighbors)
That overbite tho, and those rolls!

Meet Typhlonectes natans aka a “rubber eel.” In reality it’s an #amphibian & more closely related to #frogs than to true #eels . ImageImage
Typhlonectes natans is an aquatic #caecilian native to northern South America, & this species is (to my understanding) the most common caecilian in the pet trade.

(this guy/gal is captive bred & was being sold at a reptile show in MN)

This #FrogFriday I netted up some beautiful gray tree #frog #tadpoles (Hyla chrysoscelis or versicolor) and this gorgeous northern leopard frog (Lithobates pipiens) from a small, boggy wetland. 1/n ImageImageImageImage
I also chased (and consistently missed) several mink #frogs (Lithobates septentrionalis). These crafty ranids are said to have a foul, onion-y smell, so I was bummed not to get one in hand. Something to look forward to for the next #FrogFriday in #Minnesota ! 2/n ImageImage
Although it was #FrogFriday , there were other critters out and about, too. Including a pair of Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) and a few turtles (this one is a painted #turtle [Chrysemys picta]). 3/3 ImageImage
