In what has to be one of history's greatest examples of missing the forest for the trees, Russians have been protesting outside the US embassy in Moscow complaining that US weapons are wounding and maiming Russians.
The fact that the Russians have to be in Ukraine to be killed and maimed seems to have been completely missed. Though in truth it's just another example of Russian imperial/colonialism as a mindset that has filtered down to the lowest levels of society. They presume the

Freshwater kicks off in north-east Asia (a location consistent with the geology, climate and animals we show) with a spectacular waterfall connected to canyons. Juvenile #pterosaurs - they're young #azhdarchids - have gathered here to roost... #PrehistoricPlanet
We know essentially nothing of the roosting or resting habits of #azhdarchids but see it as likely that they would have gathered in numbers (fossil evidence does show that they were social) in places that predators couldn't easily get to. Hat-tip to discussion with @MarkWitton ..

In 2019, a population of Booroolong #frogs was rescued & translocated to Taronga for temporary holding in light of devastating impacts on its environment following prolonged drought & approaching Black Summer #bushfires zooaquarium.org.au/public/Public/… #SavingOurSpecies #ScienceWeek
Time was of the essence! These #frogs live only 3-4 years & were all adults on arrival at Taronga. These critical but ageing founders possess unique genes necessary for their species to adapt and survive in an ever-changing environment.
Cryopreserving sperm can be stored indefinitely, and so we can ensure that the #GeneticDiversity of wild populations is retained by helping these precious males produce offspring. Look at the frog sperm here!

Did you know? Many baby #frogs (tadpoles) act as “river lawn mowers” by grazing on algae and plant material that falls into rivers. Their presence helps protect clean water which people and #wildlife both depend on. #FrogFriday

We got sooo many spring peepers! Recent metamorphs about 1 cm long and a couple of adults.
Also...am I crazy or are they calling in this video? I ask if I’m crazy bc it’s out of season. Have heard gray tree frogs call out of season but not peepers

My current vote: uncertain leaning towards being against it.
Primarily bc I can't always confirm where the animals are sourced from. Are they farmed (perhaps the case for bull #frogs but prob not for other #amphibians or for non- #turtles )? If not, is take sustainable?

Update: I asked & Carolina responded! They source their Ambystoma from the bait industry.
#Fieldwork yesterday & today yielded several highlights:
A dozen blue spotted #salamander #larvae , plus one dead in a trap (with a massive belastomatid insect [aka "toe biter"]).
These larvae are part of a student's project, which he'll be presenting @MWPARC this August!

The back legs are visible as they develop on a #tadpole , but the front are hidden under a layer of skin (the operculum).

The three ponds we are trapping for #salamanders had *deafening* choruses of boreal chorus frogs (Pseudacris maculata).

#Fieldwork Friday! Went out with ugrad to scout potential blue spotted #salamander habitat.

@FieldEcology - maybe calling & activity by next week? Listened hard but no chorus or wood frogs, or peepers at these ponds or those we passed while driving.

Meet Typhlonectes natans aka a “rubber eel.” In reality it’s an #amphibian & more closely related to #frogs than to true #eels .

Typhlonectes natans is an aquatic #caecilian native to northern South America, & this species is (to my understanding) the most common caecilian in the pet trade.

This #FrogFriday I netted up some beautiful gray tree #frog #tadpoles (Hyla chrysoscelis or versicolor) and this gorgeous northern leopard frog (Lithobates pipiens) from a small, boggy wetland. 1/n
I also chased (and consistently missed) several mink #frogs (Lithobates septentrionalis). These crafty ranids are said to have a foul, onion-y smell, so I was bummed not to get one in hand. Something to look forward to for the next #FrogFriday in #Minnesota ! 2/n
Although it was #FrogFriday , there were other critters out and about, too. Including a pair of Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) and a few turtles (this one is a painted #turtle [Chrysemys picta]). 3/3
