Let's break down the ABCs of climate change, starting with the 3As!
These acronyms will be useful while answering questions in the #UPSC Mains Exam, especially in GS-3! #ClimateChange #UPSC2023

A thread 🧵:
3As of Climate Change:
ABATEMENT,ADAPTATION & ASSESSMENT.
These are the three main strategies for addressing climate change.
-Abatement refers to reducing greenhouse gas emissions
⬇️
-Adaptation refers to adjusting to the impacts of climate change that are already occurring or that are expected to occur in the future
-Assessment refers to evaluating the effectiveness of different strategies and identifying new opportunities for improvement.
The 3Cs of climate change: CAUSES,CONSEQUENCES & CONTROL of climate change
&
COMMUNICATION,COOPERATION & COORDINATION
•Causes refers to the activities that are causing climate change:burning fossil fuels, deforestation, land use changes, etc
⬇️
•Consequences refers to the impacts of climate change that are already occurring or that are expected to occur in the future, such as rising sea levels, more intense heat waves & more severe storms.
•Control refers to the actions taken to reduce the causes of climate change & mitigate the consequences.
Eg:transitioning to renewable energy sources, implementing carbon pricing, increasing energy efficiency, protecting & restoring natural carbon sinks such as forests & wetlands
3Cs of climate change:
COMMUNICATION,COOPERATION & COORDINATION
-It emphasizes the importance of effective communication and collective action at different levels to address the climate crisis.
3E of climate change:
EDUCATION,ENGAGEMENT & EMPOWERMENT of the public on the subject of climate change.
•Education refers to increasing knowledge & understanding of the causes, consequences & solutions to climate change.
⬇️
Eg:
-providing accurate information on the science of climate change
-teaching critical thinking skills to evaluate competing claims &
-encouraging students to pursue careers in fields related to climate change.
⬇️
•Engagement:
-refers to actively involving the public & stakeholders in the decision-making process related to climate change
-Eg:providing opportunities for public input, involving community members in planning & implementation & fostering collaboration among different sectors
•Empowerment:
-refers to equipping individuals & communities with the tools, resources & opportunities they need to take action on climate change.
-Eg:providing access to information,education & training, supporting the development of low-carbon technologies,etc

“Climate change is deeply intertwined with global patterns of inequality. The most vulnerable are often also disproportionately impacted by measures to address climate change.”
World Bank
1. Environmental racism:
•It was African American civil rights leader Benjamin Chavis who coined the term “environmental racism” in 1982.
• He described it as “racial discrimination in environmental policy-making,the enforcement of regulations & laws, ⬇️
The doctrine was enunciated in Kesavananda Bharati v. State of Kerala(1973)
•The 13-judge bench concluded with a 7-6 majority that the Constitution’s ‘basic structure’ is inviolable and cannot be altered by the Parliament.
⬇️
“The amending power of the parliament is wide, but LIMITED. Parliament has no power to abrogate or emasculate the basic elements or the fundamental features of the constitution.”
•It’s a safety valve against majoritarian authoritarianism
Here are a few important climate terminologies to learn & remember! They will be helpful in the #UPSC mains examination especially in subjects related to environment(GS-3)!
Thread 1🧵:
1. Ecoanxiety:
It’s defined as "a chronic fear of environmental doom".
It’s fuelled by climate inaction & disproportionately affects the younger generations.
It can be combated by taking meaningful action, such as campaigning or volunteering, that gives children a sense of agency.
2. Climate Overshoot:
The period of time in which warming is increasing past the 1.5°C mark and then cooling back down is called a climate overshoot.
Few quotes that you can use in the #UPSC Mains Exam for Climate change & environment!
A thread 🧵:
“Our planet is fast approaching tipping points that will make climate chaos irreversible. We are on a highway to climate hell with our foot still on the accelerator."
- UN Secretary General
"Human activity is the cause of the climate problem.
So human action must be the
solution."
