“Climate change is deeply intertwined with global patterns of inequality. The most vulnerable are often also disproportionately impacted by measures to address climate change.”
World Bank
1. Environmental racism:
•It was African American civil rights leader Benjamin Chavis who coined the term “environmental racism” in 1982.
• He described it as “racial discrimination in environmental policy-making,the enforcement of regulations & laws, ⬇️
the deliberate targeting of communities of colour for toxic waste facilities
•the official sanctioning of the life-threatening presence of poisons & pollutants in our communities
•& the history of excluding people of colour from leadership of the ecology movements”.
⬇️
• Dr Robert Bullard, the “father of environmental justice”, found “race to be more important than socioeconomic status in predicting the location of the nation’s commercial hazardous waste facilities”.
2. Equity-centered climate policy
• It refers to policies that ensure that the benefits of climate action are shared equitably & that the burdens of climate change are not disproportionately borne by marginalized communities.
3. Community-led adaptation:
• It refers to local communities taking the lead in identifying, planning, & implementing adaptation strategies that work for them.
4. Climate justice:
• It refers to the idea that those who have contributed the least to climate change are disproportionately affected by its impacts
• therefore they have a right to a fair share of the resources & opportunities needed to address it.
5. Just transition:
•It refers to the idea of ensuring that the transition to a low-carbon economy is fair & equitable for all, particularly for marginalized communities and workers in industries that may be affected.
6. Climate migrants or Climate Refugees:
•It refers to people who are forced to move because of climate change-related events such as sea level rise, droughts, & extreme weather events.
7. Intergenerational equity:
• It refers to the idea that the current generation should not overburden future generations with the impacts of climate change
• Instead, they should take actions to safeguard the planet for future generations.

Let's break down the ABCs of climate change, starting with the 3As!
These acronyms will be useful while answering questions in the #UPSC Mains Exam, especially in GS-3! #ClimateChange #UPSC2023
Save them to your notes 📝!
A thread 🧵:
3As of Climate Change:
ABATEMENT,ADAPTATION & ASSESSMENT.
These are the three main strategies for addressing climate change.
-Abatement refers to reducing greenhouse gas emissions
⬇️
-Adaptation refers to adjusting to the impacts of climate change that are already occurring or that are expected to occur in the future
-Assessment refers to evaluating the effectiveness of different strategies and identifying new opportunities for improvement.
The doctrine was enunciated in Kesavananda Bharati v. State of Kerala(1973)
•The 13-judge bench concluded with a 7-6 majority that the Constitution’s ‘basic structure’ is inviolable and cannot be altered by the Parliament.
⬇️
“The amending power of the parliament is wide, but LIMITED. Parliament has no power to abrogate or emasculate the basic elements or the fundamental features of the constitution.”
•It’s a safety valve against majoritarian authoritarianism
Here are a few important climate terminologies to learn & remember! They will be helpful in the #UPSC mains examination especially in subjects related to environment(GS-3)!
Thread 1🧵:
1. Ecoanxiety:
It’s defined as "a chronic fear of environmental doom".
It’s fuelled by climate inaction & disproportionately affects the younger generations.
It can be combated by taking meaningful action, such as campaigning or volunteering, that gives children a sense of agency.
2. Climate Overshoot:
The period of time in which warming is increasing past the 1.5°C mark and then cooling back down is called a climate overshoot.
Few quotes that you can use in the #UPSC Mains Exam for Climate change & environment!
A thread 🧵:
“Our planet is fast approaching tipping points that will make climate chaos irreversible. We are on a highway to climate hell with our foot still on the accelerator."
- UN Secretary General
"Human activity is the cause of the climate problem.
So human action must be the
solution."
