🧵 2/ We were the first today to obtain the video & audio evidence used in the criminal case against David DePape. Now that it's out, let's talk about all that we know regarding that gruesome attack against Paul Pelosi, husband of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
3/ Paul Pelosi immediately feel to the floor after getting hit in the head w/ hammer.
He "remained unresponsive for about 3 minutes, waking up in a pool of his own blood," according to DA's Office.
He underwent surgery to repair skull fracture, injuries to right arm / hands.
4/ David DePape has pleaded not guilty to the state and federal charges lodged against him.
Six state charges include:
- attempted murder
- threatening family member of public official
- assault w/ deadly weapon
Jury trial in SF is still likely months away.
5/ Here are all the exhibits we received today from the court:
- police body camera video showing hammer attack
- audio recording of Pelosi's 911 call
- audio recording of police interview of DePape
- surveillance video from outside Pelosi home
7/ Within the roughly 20 min recording of DePape's police interrogation, DePape details why he wanted to take Nancy Pelosi hostage and explains how he used "full force" to strike Paul Pelosi in the head with a hammer.
I’m inside the San Francisco courtroom for David DeDape’s preliminary hearing - the man accused of breaking into Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s home and beating her husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer.
1/ #Scoop: Two major law enforcement agencies investigating #Pelosi attack can't agree on who opened the door once San Francisco police arrived:
Dept. of Justice:
"The 2 officers opened the door..."
SF DA's Office:
"Mr. Pelosi opened the door with his left hand..." @nbcbayarea
2/ A source familiar w/ the investigation, who personally watched the police body camera video, tells us SF DA's office got it right, adding that the video shows police knocking the door, then backing away. Door then opens from the inside and you can see Paul Pelosi opening it.
3/ Does who opened the door matter? We have no reason to believe it does, but with so many conspiracy theories already swirling online, contradicting stories from investigators are only fueling falsehoods.
DOJ & DA's office did not respond to our request for comment.
🧵#Exclusive#Scoop 1/ San Francisco DA Brooke Jenkins sat down w/ us for a wide-ringing, one-on-one interview, her first since the election.
We spoke about the criticism she's facing, the Paul Pelosi attack, & her plans to end "lawlessness."
2/ Jenkins says as DA, "all crime" is now considered illegal in San Francisco.
She says her predecessor Chesa Boudin (recalled by voters in June) ordered staff not to pursue charges for quality of life crimes (i.e. graffiti), resisting arrest, & certain assaults against cops.
3/ We contacted former District Attorney Chesa Boudin to get his response to Jenkins' criticism of his office.
#BREAKING 🧵 1/ San Francisco District Attorney @BrookeJenkinsSF releases new details about attack on Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband, Paul Pelosi.
She says David Depape broke a glass door to get into the Pelosi's SF home, went to 2nd floor to find Paul Pelosi sleeping in bed.
2/ Charges against Depape include attempted murder, residential burglary, assault w/ a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder as well as threats to a public official and their family.
DA says Depape woke up Paul Pelosi and wanted to know where his wife was.
3/ Mr. Pelosi was wearing a "loose-fitting pajama shirt & boxer shorts" when he was forced to get out of bed. He tried to access a phone in his home elevator, but Depape is accused of blocking him. Later, Pelosi asked to use bathroom and was able to call 911 with his cell phone.
1/ California's Supt. of Education @TonyThurmond took swift action after our investigation exposed how few schools are equipped to reverse deadly drug overdoses on campus.
Teen overdose deaths in California recently spiked to a nation-wide high.
2/ An overdose antidote, known as Narcan/naloxone, can bring people back to life. It's a nasal spray & the CA legislature first gave schools the power to use it on students 6 years ago. The state even offers Narcan kits for free, but we learned few schools have them on campus.
3/ We surveyed 10 largest school districts in #SanFrancisco Bay Area, home to nearly 500 schools and 320,000 students.
We learned:
- students have suffered overdoses at at least 40% of those school districts
- only 3% high schools have Narcan on campus; 0 middle & elem. schools.
