#Astrophotography

Yay! I was able to get two nights of photos after TWO months of no night sky! (Thanks Vancouver)

This is the Great Orion Nebula. I added Hydrogen Alpha capturing to really highlight the nebulosity around the main Nebula.

The Orion Nebula (M42) is about 1,350 light years away from us. It is a star formation region ("stellar region") where new stars are being throughout the cloudy areas. The dense colored region is home to the most amount of star formation (star chart overlay).

Within the dense region of the Nebula, the youngest and brightest stars in the Nebula are thought to be as young as 10,000 years old (about when the Sabre Tooth Tiger went extinct).

I was able to get this level of detail with only:

Hydrogen Alpha: 1 hour

All captured with my @QHYCCD 268M and Takahashi FSQ-85EDX at 450mm from my balcony in light-polluted downtown Vancouver. My telescope on the balcony!

Unsurprisingly, Vinay Prasad has thoughts about children's suicide. He'd be happy to know they have decreased, not increased, since the pandemic started.

alt-text: a post where he, like other ghouls of COVID, evoke children's suicide to scare people.

`
in true amateur fashion:

a) confuses suicide w/ "mental health"
b) asserts that suicide is more reliably coded v covid death (despite coroners taking a long time to determine intentional v unintentional v undetermined)
c) alludes to "disruptions" worsening suicide

IN ONE TWEET!
Vinay Prasad is probably the type of misinformation spreader that bothers me the most. He knows exactly what he's doing, but his goal of fame and notoriety eclipses any other principles he has. It's so craven. Ugh.

The reality is that the antivaxx scaremongering about suidden cardiac deaths or cardiac deaths generally (Dr Campbell, Malhotra) doesn't hold up to some pretty basic scrutiny.

The increase in cardiac deaths occurred due to covid, and it hasn't been increasing since vax
As well, it's pretty obvious that spikes in cardiac deaths occur during periods of spikes of covid deaths as well (each wave is different, of course, but the pattern is undeniable)
to predict some antivax responses:

A) but what about UK data?!
If you're relying on John Campbell for your info, do better, like the BHF. UK And unless you can propose some physiological difference between UK and US hearts, it doesn't matter.

Pediatric Suicide Rates
Pandemic Comparators
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

We are not seeing any increase of suicide rates in kids in the US, and in fact, the suicide rate in children has decreased by 7.6% since the beginning of the pandemic. This is welcome news, and important.

/1 Chart: Pediatric Suicide Rate (Jan 2014 to June 2022) X axi
We can check this in two ways. The first is by using Winters Seasonal Additive mathematics to "predict" what the suicides we saw Jan 2014-Feb 2020 would forecast. In this case, the model predicts 4,182 suicides and we have seen 3,916 so far (6.4% less than predicted).

/2 Chart: Suicide Rates compared to Winter's Additive Seasonal
The second way is to compare the odds ratios. Here, i've done a cool trick (name it after me!) by comparing each month between 2017 and 2022 to its same month comparator for 2017-2019 (the reference period). As we can see, there is a SEVERE decrease during the initial phase.

Myth spread by antivaxxers:
Vaccination does not prevent transmission

Reality:
You are 3x less likely to get covid if you have a vaccine, and you clear the virus faster, reducing your likelihood transmission significantly if you are vaccinated.

Another myth perpetuated by antivaxxers:
The effectiveness of the vaccine against death and hospitalization is minimal now

Reality: you are 7x less likely to die of covid if you are vaccinated, and 18x less likely if you've received the bivalent booster.

Myth propogated by antivaxxers:
Boosters don't work

Age adjusted rates for hospitalization are 3x higher for people who were vaccinated but didn't get their booster compared to those who did (and 30x higher for unvaccinated folks)

False dichotomy of the pandemic: people who criticize public health decisions to during covid neglect that the alternative is covid running rampant and killing more people/destroying more families.

It's ok to blame COVID for our remaining choices.

/1 Don't fall into false dichotomy traps! The world is more com
Example: the decision wasn't "close school/mask/restrict movement/limit group or not", it was "or allow c19 to infect & kill more people.

Even with the measures taken, more than 10mil kids became orphaned by covid. Far more would be without measures.

So when people say "masks harm kids" or major pediatric organizations say "online school is harmful," they can do so and exploit the false dichotomy. I am very confident that a child losing a parent or grandparent is harmful as well.

🍁Suicidology Update 🍁
🍁Suicide in Canada during the Pandemic 🍁

Quite simply, suicide rates in Canada have sharply decreased since the onset of the pandemic. It is a profound effect, with changes we haven't seen going back 25 years.

/1 chart: Suicide Rates in Canada have sharply decreased since
Frequently asked questions:

"Is this caused by people dying of covid?"
No, and we can test this by age stratification. If COVID was responsible for the decrease, we would see an over-representation of decrease in older groups, and the decrease is consistent in all age groups. suicide rates by year and age, showing the drop in 2020 is v
