1\Turkey, its people, and its government were NOT prepared for an earthquake of this size or any other major disaster. This has multiple reasons, which can be divided into 3:
1) Lack of meritocracy at all layers of society 2) Corruption 3) Unscientific beliefs & fatalism
2\ These "problematic pillars" of socio-politics have been endemic to the region for the last 1000 years, albeit with a few pockets of enlightenment.
