As I write these words, earthquakes of magnitudes 7.8 & 7.5 have devastated Turkey & Syria with 22k dead. Could casualties be minimized? Absolutely.

1\Turkey, its people, and its government were NOT prepared for an earthquake of this size or any other major disaster. This has multiple reasons, which can be divided into 3:

1) Lack of meritocracy at all layers of society
2) Corruption
3) Unscientific beliefs & fatalism
2\ These "problematic pillars" of socio-politics have been endemic to the region for the last 1000 years, albeit with a few pockets of enlightenment.

We've created Ataturk, but also Islamic dictatorships. We're proud descendants of Rumi but let freaks like Adnan Oktar roam free.
