🔴‘Thread: Nellie Massacre’
On this day in 1983, nearly 2000 #Bengali Muslims were killed within 6hrs in the state of #Assam led by the local Tiwa Hindu community called as #NellieMassacre It was a targeted, planned, and preemptive assault on the Bengali Muslim community.
There was also involvement of members of the #RSS. The authorities, including the Home Ministry and the National Police Commission, did not take action despite alerts. Moreover, then-Prime Minister of India, #IndiraGandhi , also did not take any action against the perpetrators.
Mohammad Safeeruddin, a victim of the Nellie Massacre stated in an interview that “They were chasing and running behind us and killing from morning 9 am till 3 pm. Mother, 2 sons, brother’s daughter-in-law, and my niece were killed in our family.”
Taizul Haque, the secretary of a mosque in Nellie which was burnt down stated that “They have bombed our mosque. There were 9 thousand people living in 8 villages being trapped by 40 thousand people.” The #NellieMassacre depicts the legacy of India’s Crimes against Humanity.
There is credible evidence that establishes not only complicity of the #Indian authorities in human rights violations, but also calls those violations CAH. The need of the hour is that #internationalorganizations must take actions against the atrocities being done in #India.
