Yesterday, we did a 🧵 on one of the biggest distortions of truth in the #NewsCorpse hit piece on @BrittHiggins_ yesterday.

Today, we’re going to do another thread.

Strap in.

1/13
We’re going to address the statements and implications in the piece (2 are included below, but there are more) that because Brittany initially:

- behaved as if she were embarrassed;

- said she wasn’t going to make a complaint to police;

- sent Reynolds flowers; and

2/13
- didn’t initially refer to what happened to her as a rape;

that it would suggest she was lying about what happened.

This kind of shit happens to women all the fucking time and it’s disgusting.

For the record, women who’ve been raped are in a trauma crisis.

3/13
They might do some or all of the following:

- feel unable to accept they’ve been assaulted, even to the point of denying it happened;

- not want to make a police report & even destroy evidence;

- not want to discuss the assault & be unable to even say the word “rape”;

4/13
- feel guilty and embarrassed about what’s happened, because they initially blame themselves;

- feel grateful for any crumbs of humanity they get from others over the incident, however small; and/or

- not know how to ask for what they need or articulate anything much.

5/13
So the #NewsCorpse claim that because Brittany wasn’t immediately & enthusiastically telling people she was raped & demanding all sorts of action take place means she wasn’t raped is outrageous nonsense.

Further, claiming Brittany wasn’t raped because she sent her boss …

6/13
… flowers is fucking shameful.

Albrechtsen is unfit to work in the media (particularly in any area where she reports on women’s issues).

FWIW, the writer of this tweet thread has been raped twice. Many years later, I still find it almost impossible to talk about.

7/13
I still find it almost impossible to use the words “rape” in relation to myself, because it’s almost impossible to accept that this happened to me and I wasn’t to blame.

After my second rape, I spent over a week NOT telling anyone (even though this meant I destroyed any …

8/13
… chance of a conviction), because I was wearing a skirt 2 inches above my knee when it happened so thought I must have been to blame.

And this was some years after I started writing on victim blaming and rape culture so KNEW I wasn’t at fault.

This is NORMAL behaviour.

9/13
Brittany had so much to deal with.

This issue involved her job and relationships with colleagues and bosses as well as other matters.

She would’ve also instinctively felt responsible for the alleged crime because she willingly went to Parlt House with the alleged perp.

10/13
And for having too much to drink that night.

Women are NEVER to blame for rape even if drunk or in the wrong place.

Yet all over social media, Brittany is STILL constantly attacked for going to PH with the alleged perp and for drinking that night.

It’s fucked.

11/13
Rape culture is so strong and entrenched that the thoughts women have after they’re raped are incredibly confusing and difficult to interpret.

Self-blame is endemic.

And these feelings come on top of trauma, which makes them even more difficult to make sense of.

12/13
For Murdoch to use these absolutely natural emotions & actions to deliberately cast doubt on a person’s truth for profit continues to be the act of an evil, disgusting human.

We have to stop him.

We also have to stop the @AusFedPolice from working with him to harm women.

Ends.
PS: My 2nd rape still has major negative implications on my life 9 years later, as the perp was someone known in my family & I’ve never been forgiven for naming him as a rapist and the aftermath of that.

If you think any woman names a rapist lightly you’re fucking dreaming.

There’s a lot we could say about the @AusFedPolice leak about @BrittHiggins_ in #NewsCorpse’s @australian rag out today.

But for now, we’ll limit ourselves to addressing just one issue.

So here’s a 🧵.

1/-
We want to address the implication that Brittany is somehow complicit with Labor or some sections of the media by meeting with prominent Australians during the furore over her alleged rape.

It may surprise people to learn that when a person or group is in the news …

2/-
… they often talk to or take opinions from other people, esp. people who’ve been through similar public issues.

When we were in the middle of the Alan Jones campaign, for eg, we constantly spoke to many people and groups.

Some of them would be very surprising to many.

1. If you say you don’t wanna scrap #COVID19 protections because they’re annoying: well, road safety rules are also annoying.

2. If you say you don’t wanna scrap ‘em because Australia can’t afford it: well, we spend hundreds of billions on obsolete submarines & affords those.
3. If you say it’s because people hate #COVID19 restrictions: well, they don’t like bans on taking bottled liquids & nail scissors on planes, either.

4. If you say it’s because COVID is “just a flu”: well, there’s no flu that kills from heart attacks & strokes for months after.
5. If you say it’s because there’s no point protecting ppl from disease: well, we’ve MASSIVE health & border control programs to protect from many other diseases.

6. If you say it’s because we have vaxxes: well, they don’t protect much from repeat infection, & immunity’s waning.

A. Okay so here’s a 🧵 on all the things people are getting wrong about Alan Jones & others spreading hatred, lies, racism and misogyny on shows like QandA.

Strap yourself in.

1. For the love of Christ, stop saying it’s fine for arseholes to be given big media platforms.
B. If you can listen to Jones spreading his hate on Indigenous affairs without being badly traumatised, it makes you highly privileged.

For you to say others should also be able to listen to it too because “balance is important” or “they show themselves up as pricks” is shit.
C. The best analogy here is the Equal Marriage plebiscite.

Straight people everywhere said it was fine or important because “we’ll get all views” & “we’ll know for sure this is what the nation wants”.

Meanwhile, LGBTIQA+ Australians were suiciding & traumatised by the debate.

🧵 A. I’m sitting outside a coffee shop in a Victorian town, waiting for a client.

There’s an older woman drinking tea at the next table, chatting to her friend.

She’s obviously fairly poor and somewhat unwell, judging by her appearance and lack of mobility when she leaves.
B. She’s crying.

Because she’s just found out her home is being sold by its owner, and in this town it’s v. unlikely that the new owner will let her stay since every second residence is now an @airbnb_au.

In fact, in this town many businesses are now only open intermittently …
C. … because people can no longer afford to live there as there are so many short-term accomodation places that there are very, very few long-term rentals.

This causes all kinds of stresses for the town, including that its elderly residents are being made homeless.

So here’s a short 🧵 on 1 of the consequences of uncontrolled #COVID19 spread.

My mother turns 83 this weekend, & until today we had a function for a relatively large extended family function booked in a large hotel near where she lives.

1/7
But as BA.5 spreads wildly, we’ve had a family convo today in which we’ve decided to go to a park for a socially-distanced picnic instead.

Because we’ve several health-compromised people, plus others who work in healthcare & don’t want to take #COVID19 back to patients.

2/7
And honestly, nearly every family would similarly have people who similarly really can’t afford to catch #COVID19.

Obviously, this cancellation means a loss of many, many hundreds of dollars for the hotel involved.

A. Thread. Every year at MFW we’re more filled with dread as #IWD rolls around.

Not because we oppose a day meant to be about raising awareness of justice & equity for women, but because every year it’s more and more performative bullshit which sends women’s rights backwards.
B. Yes, we know there are some events which benefit women for #IWD. This thread isn’t about those events and women: good on ‘em.

But as our Twitter poll last week showed, the vast majority of events and actions are performative, infantilising, virtue-signalling bullshit.
C. People need to understand these offensive pink-cupcake breakfasts are almost always for wealthy, white corporates to allow them to feel they’ve achieved something for women.

This actually PREVENTS those people from caring about taking action which might actually help women.
