We spend more than half of our lives trying to build a career for ourselves and more than 50% of our waken hours for Work (including the time spent on daily traffic, preparation for work and what not).
Most of my friends at work look like they could eat heavy meal (एक थाल) and can tackle almost anything (जे पनि). However, at times when we struggle with different emotions at workplace, almost all of us choose to remain silent.
Even though we make us look like Mountains from the outside, I feel that sometimes all we can do is accept the fact that “it’s okay to be not okay at times”.
Since last few years I have tried being vocal about mental health and I love engaging myself in open/comfortable discussions about mental health with my friends, colleagues at work, and even at home. But, I usually get mixed kind of response to this.
Few friends/colleagues are really supportive and others are way too judgemental. I usually ignore the latter and look on the brighter side of things where together we can cut away the stigma and start talking about all these things openly without shame.
Corporations in Nepal spend equal to nothing on securing a safe and healthy workplace environment where employees can discuss mental health openly.
Regarding individuals who take managerial/leadership roles in these corporations, if we start measuring their emotional intelligence at workplace, I doubt if they can really pass that test.
They have “I own you”, “I have paid for your time”, “Keep all these things at home” kind of attitude/response in general.
I hope all of us can work together in curating a workplace and a society at large where mental health is taken as seriously as our physical health, where individuals are accepted and treated out of love and respect rather than out of ownership.
