One year ago today, Ukraine entered a painful chapter few of us could imagine or comprehend, even as it brutally began.

Every day since, Ukrainians have been forced to rise against the hell of war. They have rewritten Europe's story. 1/8
In Europe, and in the climate community, we have a singular role to play.

The European #GreenDeal was always about security and shielding ourselves from climate risks.

Its importance now grows by the day. It is a peace project, and we owe it to Ukrainians to succeed. 2/8
Russia's aggression is the latest proof that fossil fuels tend towards violence & autocracy.

For the last seven decades, we have seen these costly and poisonous dependencies spill over into destruction, again and again.

Let this be the last fossil fuel war. 3/8
We need a new geopolitics of renewable energy.

It won't be perfect. The road there will be bumpy. But it will be vastly safer & more peaceful for people and planet. 4/8
Russia's energy warfare on Europe has cost EU states €768 billion in fiscal measures to protect people from energy costs alone. @Bruegel_org

Not counting military costs or the cost of a disorderly rush towards energy efficiency & renewables we could have launched years ago. 5/8
Historic oil & gas profits are bolstering the industry's lobby efforts. They want only one thing: more drilling, more pipelines, more profits.

When will we learn? 6/8
Until then, Ukraine is already rebuilding, wasting no time & doing it with renewables. Russia's all-out assault on Ukraine's energy grid has pushed it towards the most logical solution: hospitals are running on solar panels.

Ukraine is looking to tomorrow. 7/8
My Ukrainians colleague always remind me that beyond the headlines and military news, life goes on.

They are showing us the way. Let's stay focused on our peace project and follow their resilience, compassion & courage. Ukraine we are with you. 8/8

This #COP27 caused deep frustrations, but it wasn’t for nothing. It achieved a significant breakthrough for the most vulnerable countries.

COP27 was always the "Loss & Damage COP" and parties dug deep to deliver.
The Loss & Damage Fund was a dream at #COP26 last year.

Now it is enshrined & on track to start running in 2023.

A lot of work to go on the detail, but the principle is in place & that is a significant mindset shift as climate impacts start to bite.
Onto #COP28. We know the challenge:

The fossil lobby's fingerprints are everywhere in the agreement as they battle the inescapable phase-out of their billion $ subsidies.

This term, "phase out", failed to make the final text.

We all have a target for next year.

Europe must impose full energy sanctions on Russia immediately.

There is no good purpose in waiting or letting the threat hang. 1/9
Since day 1 of this callous invasion, there are calls to immediately end our use of Russian gas, oil and coal.

The energy & economic case is there. It is strong.

bloomberg.com/news/articles/… 2/9
Yes, energy sanctions are radical & politically tough.

They involve an overnight reordering of Europe’s energy infrastructure. It will stress our economies & households will feel it.

To make this choice petrifying is part of President Putin's gambit.  3/9

Paris is working. Despite the COVID-19 crisis, we have accelerated action, the COP has responded to the IPCC’s call to close the gap towards 1.5, and coal is in the text. But there is a lot more to do. #COP26 1/6
The commitments & claims of the first week on finance, forests, end of public finance for fossil fuel, methane and cars must now be translated into real policy and incorporated in the new NDCs that has to be delivered by 2022. And Oil and gas production still to be addressed. 2/6
Greenwashing is the new climate denial & we have seen too much at play in this COP. We must strengthen accountability mechanisms for net-zero going forward. 3/6

As one of the first @hlcchampions, congratulations to @TopNigel & especially to @gmunozabogabir for his 3 years of hard work to raise ambition and the credibility of real economy pledges. We can’t deliver Paris without this action! #RaceToZero #COP26 1/5
Your drive & energy has brought us the #RaceToZero –growing since Madrid – #RaceToResilience & #GFANZ I fully support the plans to continuously improve the Marrakech Partnership (MPGCA). The next 5 years of the MPGCA must accelerate exponential change to keep 1.5C in sight. 2/5
Critical these plans include clear expectations for credible, transparent, fair, science-based (incl pre-2030 action) and independently accountable net zero targets, including considering the outputs of @antonioguterres Expert Review Group on non-state action 3/5

Le rapport du GIEC est clair : les températures augmentent dangereusement, se rapprochant de la barre des 1,5°.
On me demande souvent si je panique, ou si je perds espoir. Non. Je me bats. Nous nous battons.
#GIEC 1/5
