To be clear: the US election result is a blow in the fight against the climate crisis. The window to limit warming to 1.5°C is closing—these next 4 years are critical. But let’s not despair. The Paris Agreement has proven resilient, stronger than any one country’s policies (1/10) Today, despite geopolitical challenges, strong economic momentum drives the global transition. I think and hope no other country will follow if the US withdraws from the Paris Agreement. They know the transition is in their own interest—for their security and economies. (2/10)

One year ago today, Ukraine entered a painful chapter few of us could imagine or comprehend, even as it brutally began.

Every day since, Ukrainians have been forced to rise against the hell of war. They have rewritten Europe's story. 1/8 In Europe, and in the climate community, we have a singular role to play.

The European #GreenDeal was always about security and shielding ourselves from climate risks.

Its importance now grows by the day. It is a peace project, and we owe it to Ukrainians to succeed. 2/8

This #COP27 caused deep frustrations, but it wasn’t for nothing. It achieved a significant breakthrough for the most vulnerable countries.

COP27 was always the "Loss & Damage COP" and parties dug deep to deliver. The Loss & Damage Fund was a dream at #COP26 last year.

Now it is enshrined & on track to start running in 2023.

A lot of work to go on the detail, but the principle is in place & that is a significant mindset shift as climate impacts start to bite.

Europe must impose full energy sanctions on Russia immediately.

There is no good purpose in waiting or letting the threat hang. 1/9 Since day 1 of this callous invasion, there are calls to immediately end our use of Russian gas, oil and coal.

The energy & economic case is there. It is strong.

Paris is working. Despite the COVID-19 crisis, we have accelerated action, the COP has responded to the IPCC’s call to close the gap towards 1.5, and coal is in the text. But there is a lot more to do. #COP26 1/6 The commitments & claims of the first week on finance, forests, end of public finance for fossil fuel, methane and cars must now be translated into real policy and incorporated in the new NDCs that has to be delivered by 2022. And Oil and gas production still to be addressed. 2/6

As one of the first @hlcchampions, congratulations to @TopNigel & especially to @gmunozabogabir for his 3 years of hard work to raise ambition and the credibility of real economy pledges. We can’t deliver Paris without this action! #RaceToZero #COP26 1/5 Your drive & energy has brought us the #RaceToZero –growing since Madrid – #RaceToResilience & #GFANZ I fully support the plans to continuously improve the Marrakech Partnership (MPGCA). The next 5 years of the MPGCA must accelerate exponential change to keep 1.5C in sight. 2/5

Le rapport du GIEC est clair : les températures augmentent dangereusement, se rapprochant de la barre des 1,5°.
On me demande souvent si je panique, ou si je perds espoir. Non. Je me bats. Nous nous battons.
#GIEC 1/5 Chaque dixième de degré compte. La différence entre 1,5° et 2° est dramatique.
Nous pouvons toujours rester sous les 1,5° de réchauffement.
Mais il faut agir maintenant.

The new IPCC report could not be clearer. Global temperatures are rising dangerously close to the 1.5°C limit of the Paris Agreement.
#IPCC 1/4 I am often asked if I am panicking or losing hope. I am not. Instead, I am fighting, we are fighting, because every fraction of a degree matters. We can still stay within 1.5°C, but world leaders need to act now.

Five years ago, I had barely slept for 2 weeks. Now I've recovered, and with the #Parisversaire today, I've been thinking about how we designed the #ParisAgreement – and how it is working today. A thread 1/16 We knew how big the task would be. We were all veterans of the UN negotiation process, and had lived through the trauma of #COP15 in Copenhagen. We knew we needed to take a new approach, one built on an integrated theory of human, organizational, and state behavior 2/16

Five years ago today I was locked in negotiations… the #ParisAgreement on climate change was on a knife edge. We made it and yes, let's celebrate its 5th birthday - but let us also reflect on the challenges ahead as we tackle the #climatecrisis as a global community 1/8 The @UNEP #EmissionGap report is clear: despite the 4-7% decrease in CO2 emissions this year due to #COVID19 we are heading for a temperature rise in excess of 3°C this century 2/8
