Elimination of animal milk from the diet can significantly reduce iodine intake of a person. Iodine deficiency might not significantly impact the quality of life of a person but if a woman of a child-bearing age is iodine deficient, then she faces a high risk of miscarriage.
At present, the prohibitive cost of plant milks is keeping the out of the hands of maximum consumers in India. Adding the iodine info, will help educate consumers about the importance of animal milk for acquiring iodine through food. Iodine quantity in milk is known to vary.
It will help greatly when consumers take pics of such a warning and share on social media. Then the info will go around the world. #plantbased milks can't compete with this. Only those who are lactose intolerant should consider plant milks. #vegan#vegans#carnivorediet
Hypothyroidism & iodine deficiency have seen a resurgence in industrialized countries. Culprit is the #plantbased#vegan. The thyroid uses iodine & selenium to make thyroid hormones. If there is a deficiency of I & Se, then the thyroid cannot work properly. Thanks for reading!
Back in college, I was once appearing for a viva vôce of an economics related subject. The examiner asked us an out-of-syllabus question, "Why do you think the govt gives subsidies for poultry industry?" I will remain forever grateful to my 🧠 for bringing up the answer! Tiny🧵👇🏼
For reasons I still do not understand, my brain remembered something we are taught in primary school. Kwashiorkor is a disease caused by severe protein deficiency. Shamefully, children still die due to it in India. After getting reminded of kwashiorkor, I connected the dots.
I replied, "Kwashiorkor is still prevalent in India. By subsidizing the poultry industry, the govt is trying to increase supply of chicken. This will reduce prices of chicken thus making it more affordable to those who want to eat it. This can help reduce protein deficiency."
Why social media nutrition activism matters - a short thread ⬇️ A family member with a science degree was stunned to know about the sources of vitamin B12 .
I posted multiple stories about the animal sources of vitamin B12 on WhatsApp status. I love to use Canva & Adobe Express to make stories about cobalamin. I also explained that processed foods such as Kellogs cornflakes, Chocos, Horlicks, Boost, Marmite, etc have vitamin B-12.
So this gent met me in person the same day. Looking at my status on his phone, he asked, "Is this verified news?" I was wide-eyed. Here was an engineer who had biology till class 12. He had completely forgotten that we had learnt about the animal origin food sources of vitB12.
