On #bbcqt tonight: GB News's Tom Harwood (again); & Climate Minister Graham Stuart, appointed by multimillionaire free-market ex-banker Rishi Sunak. Stuart received campaign donations from one of the largest fuel distributors in the UK, & an aviation consultant & recruiter.
In 2019, Stuart received a £10,000 donation towards his re-election campaign from JR Rix & Sons, a Hull-based business primarily involved in the distribution and sale of fuel, including heating oil, diesel and petrol.
Climate Minister Stuart recently told the all-party parliamentary group for the environment that he firmly supported a new coalmine in Cumbria and backed the latest oil and gas licensing round.

#bbcqt
Stuart said a 'more nuanced' take on fossil fuels is required “rather than viewing all fossil fuels as the spawn of the devil”.

In the same meeting, he said he had “time for climate change sceptics” & does not believe that they should be “pushed out of the conversation”.

#bbcqt
This is the third time that GB "News" presenter Tom Harwood has been on #bbcqt, & continues the deeply concerning trend of having explicitly right-wing panellists from right-wing overseas based billionaire-owned or multimillionaire-funded
news media.
My open letter to the @BBC raising very widely held concerns about biases on #bbcqt, published on February 18th, has now been read more than 200,000 times, by people in 144 countries.

The @BBC has still not bothered to give me the courtesy of a reply.

In June 2019, Max Hastings accurately described Boris Johnson as "unfit for national office, because it seems he cares for no interest save his own fame & gratification... [his] premiership will almost certainly reveal a contempt for rules, precedent, order & stability." ImageImage
"The Conservative party... is about to foist a tasteless joke upon the British people – who will not find it funny for long."

"The experiment in celebrity government to which the Conservative Party committed us has failed, & is seen by the world to have failed."

- Max Hastings. Image
The entire national news media & every political commentator in Britain knew exactly what Boris Johnson was really like, but rarely told voters.

Britain's media & politics is profoundly broken, but few politicians or news outlets are prepared to say so.

#BREAKING: Liar & hypocrite Nigel Farage admits he broke lockdown laws. ImageImageImage
In 2017, Farage claimed Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, & Bahrain refused to take a single refugee or displaced person from Syria.

2-3million Syrians in the Gulf countries. Since 2011, the Saudi Govt has hosted 2.5M refugees & given permanent residency to hundreds of thousands of Syrians.
Nigel Farage claimed that 70% of the laws in the UK are made by the EU. The real number is difficult to quantify, but the independent House of Commons library put it at just 13.2%. Image

#THREAD

Given user-generated content on news organizations’ websites or share articles on social media platforms, journalists & editors face various forms of misconducts such as trolling, hate speech, & misinformation, often called “dark participation.”
tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…
Despite efforts of news outlets to filter hate speech & misinformation, dark participation is now a serious social problem, disrupting discussion among readers about various social issues covered by news articles, & inciting hatred & advocating discrimination against minorities.
This study is based on interviews with 15 Canadian journalists who have experience or familiarity with the issue of dark participation. It specifically investigates how news outlets and journalists manage UGC and respond to increasing “dark participation” in their online systems.

The Tories need to go. However, "in terms of economic policy, the differences between the @Conservatives & the @UKLabour parties are so tiny as to be insignificant. No matter which party is in office, we see the reproduction of what already exists."

'There is a general desire to restart the engine of history & move forward with purpose. Yet technocratic elites continue to care only about maintaining our socioeconomic system in its current form. Armed only with a cacophony of banal soundbites, they have no positive message.'
"They want every one of us to accept that any attempt to make things better will inevitably make things worse. It is now high time that we engaged in some genuine truth-telling. There is no longer any comfort to be found in voting for the least-worst option."

Another reality-denying "Christian" dimwit. This one pretending the neoliberal neo-con Henry Jackson Society isn't right-wing. 🤪

The HJS is one of the leading exponents of neoconservatism in the UK, deeply influenced by Islamophobia & an open embrace of the ‘War on Terror’.
The HJS is a highly secretive 'think tank' & lobbying group which has flouted parliamentary transparency rules while paying benefits and expenses to top Conservative MPs including Priti Patel (ex-HJS Political Council) & Michael Gove, a founding member.

On 11th January 2013, Simon Sweeney, Lecturer in international political economy at the University of York, had a letter published in the @guardian, asking 'what's the EU ever done for us'?

It's quite the letter...

theguardian.com/world/2013/jan…
At last we may get a debate on Britain's relationship with Europe. What did the EEC/EU ever do for us? Not much, apart from: providing 57% of our trade; structural funding to areas hit by industrial decline; clean beaches and rivers; cleaner air; lead free petrol;
restrictions on landfill dumping; a recycling culture; cheaper mobile charges; cheaper air travel; improved consumer protection and food labelling; a ban on growth hormones and other harmful food additives; better product safety;
