#Isar2 has been one of the most productive nuclear reactors in the world over the past decade. It is a modern #Konvoi type reactor, with a power of 1475 MW, and originally designed to operate for 80 years.
#Isar2 means every year:
➡️ 10 to 12 TWh of sovereign electrical #energy
➡️ 3.5 million homes supplied with low-carbon electricity
➡️ 10 million tonnes of #CO2 avoided
This reactor connected to the grid in 1988 will be stopped prematurely in April, after merely 35 years of operation.
It does not have the value of a representative survey, but we heard from the few locals that they’d like the power plant to continue to operate.
As for the antis who came to demonstrate, it is clear that even though we disagree, dialogue is possible, and even easier and more peaceful than in France.
The last three German nuclear reactors still in operation #Isar2#Neckarwestheim2#Emsland are among the most powerful and reliable in the world. They provide Germany and Europe with a low-carbon, safe and reliable power supply.
Yet nuclear power plants are still doomed to be shut down soon, while 36% of 🇩🇪 electricity is still produced by burning coal (data for 2021 by Ember Climate). And +4200 people die prematurely each year in Germany due to air pollution caused by coal-fired power plants.
Here's an article by journalists who came to cover the rally of antis, and were surprised to find us there: idowa.de/inhalt.kernkra…

Thank you to those who have believed in us since the beginning in 2018, and to all who have joined us along the way. There was nothing obvious or easy about it.
🧵⤵️
We have come a long way, to break the taboo, to re-establish the facts, to educate, to change the tone of the debate, to make beautiful encounters, to propose, to doubt, to progress, to grow. To allow citizens to reclaim their opinion on nuclear energy.
Proud and hopeful.
A growing part of the French and European population is becoming aware of the benefits of nuclear energy to climate, environment and society. We need nuclear energy to protect the climate and ecosystems while building a livable future for all.
In France, country with the highest in the world share of #nuclear in its #energy mix, nothing can be taken for granted. Here’s a video from Thursday night’s debate in Lyon on new nuclear reactors. What happened? (a thread 🧵)
In France there’s currently an ongoing #Penly debate on the deployment of the first pair of #EPR2 reactors. Last year, the President E. Macron announced the relaunch of the French nuclear industry by constructing at least six, up to fourteen reactors EPR2.
Each debate is on another topic. In #Lyon the speakers were invited to discuss new nuclear in the light of #climate and geopolitical uncertainties. Unfortunately, the debate never started because of the small group of antinuclear activists who interrupted every attempt.
Everyone should be aware that the current state of French #nuclear, currently under fire from critics due to the low availability of its reactor fleet (quickly forgetting more than 40 years of steady service) is the result of 25 years of relentless anti-nuclear effort.
🧵⤵
It is hard to imagine when looking at France from outside, but its nuclear fleet is a survivor.
Antinuclear ideology has been undermining the 🇨🇵 nuclear sector and hindering the course of its operation since the 90s.
Lepage, Voynet, Cochet, Batho, Royal, Hulot, Pompili: antinuclear personalities, who also were environment, sometimes energy ministers, also representing France in Brussels 🇪🇺.
40 nuclear reactors in operation🟢
The 🇫🇷 #nuclear fleet is getting back in the game 🎮🌤
Following #Flamanville 2 and #Cruas 2, #Cattenom 4 after 2 failed launches in recent days seems to be back for good. And this morning two other units join them: #Bugey 3 and #Dampierre 3 💪
The availability of the park finally exceeds 70%, which had not happened since last winter!
The 40 GW of production is in sight.
We must be clear, this is very low for a winter season❄️, and we are missing the 16 reactors 🔴still unavailable.
But this collective relaunch is a real breath of fresh air in this cold anticyclonic episode, where nuclear energy and hydraulics 💧are the only #lowcarbon sources able to ensure the electricity supply ⚡️.
