"Forty of the 100 U.S. senators co-sponsored a resolution on Wednesday urging a strong U.S. government response to any Chinese efforts to clamp down on dissent in #HongKong, including the use of sanctions and other tools." news.yahoo.com/forty-us-senat…
The resolution is non-binding, but is intended to convey a strong sense that lawmakers are closely watching events in China and will respond.
"This resolution calls for the release of all wrongfully-accused defendants and encourages the U.S. government and democratic partners to use all tools available to hold Beijing and the Hong Kong government accountable," said Senator Jim Risch.
"I look forward to securing this bipartisan resolution’s swift passage as we continue our efforts to enhance every aspect of U.S. policy toward China," Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, the committee's chairman, said in a statement.
Among other things, the resolution condemns the security law, supports Hong Kongers "as they fight to exercise fundamental rights and freedoms" and condemns the imposition of "false and politically-motivated charges" and the jailing of Jimmy Lai.

Honduras' decision to seek official relations with #China and cut them with #Taiwan on Tuesday was about "pragmatism, not ideology," driven by rising debt and investment needs, Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina said on Wednesday. usnews.com/news/world/art…
Speaking on local television, Reina said Honduras was "up to its neck" in financial issues and debt - including the $600 million it owes Taiwan - and this had partly motivated Honduras' decision to open relations with China.
"The global situation is complicated, we need to open up," Reina said. "We need investment, we need cooperation."

Last week, during the annual legislative meetings, China's top leadership accused Washington of launching a comprehensive "containment" and "suppression" of Beijing, causing bilateral ties to continue worsening.
"Western countries led by the United States have implemented all-around containment, encirclement, and suppression of China, which has brought unprecedented severe challenges to our country's development," Chinese leader Xi Jinping said.

#China is censoring some discussion of Mr Xi Jinping’s unanimous confirmation for president in the nation’s legislature, showing the sensitivities around his increasing grip on power as he begins his precedent-busting third term.” straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia…
The #2952 hashtag that started on Weibo after the 2,952-0 vote in favour of Mr Xi on Friday no longer allows ordinary users to post comments. The results that appear are mostly from state media outlets like People’s Daily, the ruling Communist Party’s flagship newspaper.
Sarcastic comments that described the result as “so awesome” or “the largest-scale democratic vote exercise” were censored, according to Freeweibo.com, a website run by dissidents that tracks posts that have been blocked on the Twitter-like site.
