In his 2023 State of the Union address, President Biden declared COVID no longer controls our lives.

But what about the millions of Americans with #LongCOVID?

Here's what you need to know.

A thread 🧵
1/9

#LongCOVID is a significant, long-term consequence of even mild SARS-CoV-2 infections—one with no effective treatments.

As many as one in five US adults who have survived a SARS-CoV-2 infection are still living with its symptoms.

1/5 = 20%
2/9

#LongCOVID will have vast and far-reaching effects on the country.

For example, up to four million working-age Americans are currently unable to work due to the severity of their Long COVID symptoms.

4 million = ~ population of Los Angeles
#LongCOVID is now a recognized disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504.

We must view this as an emergency situation, regardless of whether the federal government continues to declare #COVID19 a public health emergency or not.
What is #LongCOVID?

It's a term that is interchangeable with Long-Haul COVID, Post-COVID Conditions, and Post-acute Sequelae of COVID-19.

All of these terms describe the same set of conditions.
Anybody who is experiencing any symptoms from an acute SARS-CoV-2 infection that persist beyond three months should be considered to have #LongCOVID.

To date, patients have reported more than 200 distinct symptoms, affecting every organ system.

Read that again. 200 Symptoms.
The risk that an acute SARS-CoV-2 infection will result in a #LongCOVID diagnosis is still hard to pin down.

A recent review estimated that 10–30% of non-hospitalized cases and 50–70% of hospitalized cases will result in Long COVID.
It has been difficult to identify if there are factors that increase the risk of #LongCOVID in those who contract the virus.

The best available strategy for preventing Long COVID is to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2

TL:DR

THE BEST WAY TO NOT GET LONGCOVID =
DON'T GET COVID
Unfortunately, studies that aim to explore the prognosis of #LongCOVID have yielded little good news.

Most symptoms of Long COVID don't resolve within the first year, and some may never fully resolve.

Repeat: SOME MAY NEVER RESOLVE.
To treat this shadow pandemic, we need a renewed commitment to precision and personalized medicine.

Every person living with #LongCOVID requires a highly personalized approach to symptom management and intervention.

Just because you survive a #Covid_19 infection

DOESN'T mean you're going to be "ok"

Testing negative might only be the beginning for you, here's why:

Most clinicians think #LongCOVID is a complete mystery!

It's NOT,

Here's what we mean...
Research shows key drivers of #LongCOVID

Including evidence strongly suggesting that pts with #LongCOVID do not fully clear the SARS-CoV-2 virus

So... what's that mean?
Instead, the virus may persist in tissue where it continues to provoke the immune system

This could lead to:

🩸 Blood clotting
🔥 Neuroinflammation
⚡️Neuropathy
