Our second thread in a series about why #Tennessee @TNGOP leadership is resorting to authoritarianism.

Generally they only care about big business/their donors. Their policies are failing average Tennesseans.

This thread is about our poor economic outcomes.

#TNDeservesBetter
#Tennessee is #42 of 50 states for average income.

The median US income is $67,521 - well above our $56,071. (Source next Tweet)

#Tennessee adheres to the Federal minimum wage law - $7.25, which it has been since 2009.

tennessean.com/story/money/20…
.@TNGOP members of the General Assembly won't allow #Tennessee Democrats to vote on proposals (like this one from @SaraforTN in 2021) which would enable cities like #Nashville and #Memphis to raise our own minimum wages.

Meanwhile, #Nashville has seen one of the highest cost of living increases in the United States. Our housing costs in particular have skyrocketed in recent years.

wsj.com/articles/infla…
More than HALF of #Tennessee residents make less than $15 an hour. Nearly 40% make less than $12.

"Tennessee ranks 8th among the 50 states and D.C...
36.7% of all workers earn less than $12 per hour — 5.4% more than the national average."

oxfamamerica.org/explore/countr…
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2021 #Tennessee was top 12 of 50 states with the highest percentage of minimum wage workers in the United States.

(This is bad. #1 - Texas - has the most minimum wage workers.)

bls.gov/opub/reports/m…
Around 1 in 5 #Tennessee kids lives in poverty. This number is from the TN Commission on Children and Youth, which is probably why @GovBillLee is trying to disband it.

(More on @GovBillLee attempts to disband the #Tennessee Commission on Chidren and Youth from @TNLookout.)

Meanwhile #Tennessee sits on a $1.6 billion surplus which could be used to help residents.

In three years, we’ve risen from 24th to No. 1 in gross domestic product growth (largely due to the success of the #Nashville region.)

But while @TNGOP backslap one another over #Tennessee's economic "successes," the money isn't being used to help average Tennesseans.

We've written a lot of threads on #Tennessee status at the bottom of 50 states on virtually everything from average income to life expectancy. Sadly it isn't a surprise that @TNGOP is now resorting to authoritarianism, since its members lack the skills to lead our state. 🧵
Basically the issue is that @TNGOP "leadership" puts big business/their donors first. They don't even think about average Tennesseans, since those folks don't have big bucks to pour into campaign coffers.
As a result #Tennessee has some of the worst outcomes for residents in the United States. Some of them are comparable to the undeveloped world, not a state in the most powerful country in human history.

Later TODAY: Join @Nashtivists for a #GunSense #NotOneMore phonebank calling #Tennessee legislators on gun bills (lowering permitless carry age, guns in cars etc.)

TODAY OR TOMORROW: If you haven't already, contact your Metro Councilmember prior to the vote on #NoNewNashvilleStadium tomorrow night.

Our petition here contains language on why we think it's a bad idea, feel free to copy/paste.

The second #NoNewNashvilleStadium vote is THIS TUESDAY. We wrote a petition with some background information and links to actions folks have already taken such as a great open letter from @_kellykitty_.

The petition contains links to contact Metro Councilmembers, tho you can also do that here. You may want to contact them all, since #WarOnNashville may affect who represents you soon.
