Bombay High Court is hearing a PIL challenging the proposed renaming of Aurangabad to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. #BombayHighCourt
A division bench of Acting Chief Justice SV Gangapurwala and Justice Sandeep V Marne is hearing the matter. #BombayHighCourt
Last month, the Supreme Court refused to entertain the petitioner's Special Leave Petition against Union's approval for the name change as the matter is already pending before the Bombay High Court #BombayHighCourt
Bench: As far as city is concerned they have already changed it. As far as district and division is concerned nothing will happen till 10 June?
Advocate General Birendra Saraf: Yes the procedure will take atleast till June 10
The petitioners submit that the name of Post Office and the Superintendent of Police is already changed
Bench: The authorities cannot change the name. As far as the city is concerned they may but for district and division they cannot
Senior Advocate Yusuf Muchhala: Here what has happened is that a whole campaign is going on to change all names of cities in Maharashtra which has got a Muslim name. This is to revise history
Muchhala refers to a Supreme Court judgement where it said that this tendency should be nipped in the bud.
Bench: But that petition was seeking to change names
The bench earlier: The authorities cannot change the name. As far as the city is concerned they may but for district and division they cannot until the procedure for that is complete
Muchhala: Why the history is now weaponized to humiliate certain groups due to the dispute of the past
AG: The naming of a city on the personality who is held in high esteem by the people is not a matter of religion
Order: The parties are put to notice that endeavour shall be made to decide the matter finally at the stage of admission on June 7.
Muchhala: How long will we keep the pot boiling due to the past?
Bench earlier: Mr. Saraf, you will have to instruct them that they should not change the name of local authorities. They cannot make the changes.
AG: I have already made the statement regarding district and revenue authorities that they cannot change (till procedure is complete)
Bench: We will record that you will issue directions that the names of the concerned revenue and district authorities will not be changed by the concerned authorities till the process is completed.
AG: I stand by it and the instructions are in the process to be issued #BombayHC
Muchhala: SC has held that present and future conflicts cannot remain prisoners of the past.
Muchhala: Why rake up these issues based on history..... Some may have done a certain atrocity, and why my lord the history is weaponized to take revenge on the present generation and make them feel humiliated. And that is why Article 21 is offended here. #BombayHighCourt

Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra (while providing the bench with facts and evidence in case): This is really becoming an exercise in futility. This is not how investigation goes on. CBI supported us. It's an absurdity, never seen something like this.
