ICYMI: This morning CODEPINK's @medeabenjamin and Tighe Barry told @SecBlinken to #FreeAssange and seek #JusticeForShireen at a #WorldPressFreedomDay event where he mentioned neither of them.
Assange has been in prison for years in London while fighting extradition to the United States.

His "crime"? Publishing the truth about US operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Gitmo, and all around the world.
"You can either be informed and your own rulers, or you can be ignorant and have someone else, who is not ignorant, rule over you." - Julian Assange Image
Assange is not the only truthteller the United States has punished while pretending to celebrate #WorldPressFreedomDay.

Chelsea Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison, had her sentence commuted, and then was imprisoned AGAIN in 2019. Image
Manning's whistleblowing exposed US atrocities during the war on terror.

One leak even included footage of the US military drone striking Reuters staff and children.

John Kiriakou was sentenced to 30 months in prison for exposing the systematic implementation of the CIA's "enhanced interrogation" (TORTURE) methods.
Philip Agee had his passport revoked for exposing the CIA's role in backing military dictatorships, torture, and death squads throughout Latin America to repress social movements.
"After 12 years with the agency I finally understood how much suffering it was causing, that millions of people all over the world had been killed or had their lives destroyed by the C.I.A. and the institutions it supports.” - Philip Agee Image
Daniel Hale is currently in prison under accusations of leaking the Drone Papers.

"I couldn’t keep living in a world in which people pretend that things weren’t happening that were.”
The Drone Papers revealed:
• The US has secret "kill lists"
• The US regularly registers civilians killed by drones as "enemies"
• Use of drone strikes was much more widespread than previously acknowledged

Edward Snowden is currently living in exile for exposing:
• 90% of Americans watched by the NSA weren't targets
• The NSA got access to Americans' phone records + tech companies' communication networks
• The NSA harvested contact lists, email content, & cell phone locations Image
Abroad, US allies Saudi Arabia and Israel have killed American journalists Jamal Khashoggi and Shireen Abu Akleh. Neither country has faced recourse, not even halting weapons shipments, from the US government. Image
This #WorldPressFreedomDay and every day, we fight for a truly free press and truly free society.

While our government fears and punishes truthtellers, we celebrate and embrace them.

"If wars can be started by lies, peace can be started by truth" - Julian Assange Image

MAY 4TH, 1970:
Four unarmed students were killed at Kent State University during a protest against the US war in Vietnam & Cambodia. (THREAD) Image
On May 1, 1970, 500 students gathered at Kent State (along with many others across the country) to protest Nixon's announcement of the invasion of Cambodia.
Kent students buried the constitution to denounce the lack of congressional approval of the invasion. Image
On May 2 & 3, the mayor asked the governor to send in the National Guard due to "confrontations" with the police at the peaceful protests.
Nearly 1,000 Guardsmen came to campus. Image

BREAKING: CODEPINK, joined by students and peace activists, gave faux Venezuelan president Juan Guaidó the welcome he deserves at the Wilson Center.

NO ROOM FOR PUPPET PRESIDENTS IN DEMOCRACY!
“Guaidó is responsible for calling on the U.S. to directly intervene, even militarily, against his own people, for organizing a failed invasion of mercenaries and a failed coup, both in 2019. There is nothing democratic about Guaidó."

Why is the government banning TikTok? It’s not about privacy.
The US, Canada, & European Commission banned TikTok on govt devices. There’s mounting pressure on Biden to ban the app. Former FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr expressed concern over data sharing w/ China, but advocates for closer ties w/ Taiwan
npr.org/2022/12/23/114…
Senators Josh Hawley and Marco Rubio have proposed bills to ban TikTok, in what the ACLU has called “a serious violation of our First Amendment rights."

☢️Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, issued his annual letter last week.
Fink continues to make misleading statements & pass the buck on the huge financial power he wields to weapons & fossil fuel companies.
Here are a few examples: 🧵 Image
Fink says:
"I’ve long believed that it’s critical for CEOs to use their voice in the world – and there’s never been a more crucial moment for me to use mine.” Image
The truth:
Fink alludes to the intertwined crises of climate change, militarism, war in Ukraine & income inequality. But: BlackRock profits massively from fossil fuels and he's hardly a voice for peace. He has a monstrous stake in growing the war machine.

20 years ago, a US-led coalition invaded Iraq, under the false claim that Saddam Hussien’s government was manufacturing weapons of mass destruction🧵

CONTENT WARNING: torture, violence, death.
Over 1,000,000 Iraqis were killed, another 9,000,000+ were displaced, and some 2,000,000 were disabled. People were killed directly by violence, and others by stress-related heart attacks, ruined sanitation, or lack of healthcare because of war.
The US tortured thousands of Iraqis as part of the “War on Terror,” killing many. The lucky survivors face lasting physical & psychological damage. It was authorized by the highest levels of Gov. They recognized torture use but have never formally apologized or paid reparations
