On the auspicious occasion of #narasimhajayanti let's look at how Narasimha opens and closes the Vishnu Sahasranama. #thread Image
He is the first Avatara to be mentioned by name, appearing right in the 3rd verse.

Sreeman Narasimha, the one from whom Lakshmi never leaves. Image
He appears around the middle in Verse 52 as

He is the Mahesvara who appeared as the Lion. Image
Narasimha also appears the last naama.

Sarva Praharanaayudha. The one who can wield anything as a weapon (to protect those devoted to Him).

Now, how does this refer to Narasimha?
After all, one may argue that being Sarva Praharanaayudha is a common attribute of all Avataras.

Indeed, Rama picks up a darbha grass to launch at Jayanta disguised as a crow. Image
And Krishna, after vowing to not take up weapons during the Kurukshetra war, nevertheless picks up a wheel to attack Bheeshma. Image
But you see, both Rama and Krishna had to *pick up* something to use as a weapon.

It is Narasimha who uses his own nails as a weapon against Hiranyakasipu.

Thus, Narasimha is Sarva Praharanaayudha. Image
It is this act that Rama refers to, when Sugreeva and others hesitate to accept Vibheeshana, fearing that he may cause harm to Rama.
Rama asks Sugreeva not to worry, and says

All the Pisachas, Danavas, Yakshas, &Rakshasaas living on the earth, if I wish, I can eliminate them with just the tip of my finger
Narasimha as Sarva Praharanaayudha, does not waste even a moment to pick up a weapon to protect His devotees.

May He protect us always!

This is a true classic.
How much ruchi (taste) there is in Rama Nama!
Bhadrachala Ramadasa doesn't tell us. He tells Rama Himself.

Dr. BMK rendering the composition perhaps in the same way the author would have intended.

A quick translation #RamNavamiSpecial #RamaNavami
Rama Nama is sweeter than Madhurasa, yogurt or even ghee.

Ramadasa talks about the sweetest of grapes and sugarcane and says that Rama Nama is sweeter than them too.
In consecutive verses, Ramadasa mentions Periya Thiruvadi (big feet) and Siriya Thiruvadi (small feet).

The name of Pakshi Vaahana (Vishnu on Garuda) is so sweet that it resides in the petals of the heart-lotus of Hanuman.
[Garuda is Vishnu's mount while Hanuman carried Rama]

Starting a short thread dedicated to the 9 forms of Devi.
O Lord Ganesha, brilliant as a million suns!

From your broken tusk and twisted trunk came the lakh verses of the Mahabharata.
Bless us so our mind shall never tire, and our pen shall never dry. Image
Vasanta Navaratri - Day 1: Shailaputri
The Soundarya Lahari of Sankara describes Devi thus:

धनुः पौष्पं मौर्वी मधुकरमयी पञ्च विशिखाः
वसन्तः सामन्तो मलयमरुदायोधनरथः ।
तथाप्येकः सर्वं हिमगिरिसुते कामपि कृपाम्
अपाङ्गात्ते लब्ध्वा जगदिद-मनङ्गो विजयते ॥

Here's a quick Sivaranjani on the Nadhaswaram by Iyermalai B Selvam.

The older among us would recognize this as the signature All India Radio tune.

One of the most heard tunes based on an Indian raga was composed by a Jewish exile in India. #Thread
The story is quite well known, but deserves a retelling.

Walter Kauffman (WK) learnt music in Berlin and Prague.

The shadow of Nazi Germany started to tail him when he refused to accept his PhD as his ordinarius Gustav Becking supported the Nazis.
WK fled Nazi Germany for India & arrived on the welcoming shores of Mumbai.

He found employment with AIR during 1937-46.
Around this time, the magical tune happened.

True to the nostalgia, Amrit Gangar's book on WK is titled "The Music that Still Rings at Dawn, Every Dawn".

There doesn't seem to be any doubt on "if Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar did hit Nalanda" or not.

How do we know this? Because the "visiting monk wrote about it"! #Thread
The “visiting monk” who wrote about Nalanda in the “1230s” is the Tibetan monk Dharmasvamin.

We get the information from his biography Chag Lo Tsaba Chos-rje-dpal.
This biography was written down by the author, as dictated by Dharmasvamin himself, and therefore, a firsthand contemporary account.

Indians are unique in how they are led to believe that Hinduism did not exist because the name is not mentioned in religious or historical texts.

For eg, today's Greeks, Italians or Egyptians do not question the past existence of their ancient religions.

#Thread
For the most part, this is because the secular, intellectual discourse about Hinduism is done completely through the lens of the Abrahamic monotheisms as they stand today.

This is illogical and perverts the way we look at our own past.
To demonstrate how absurd this is, let's take Kamal Hassan's recent statement about the Cholas and see how it fits in a different context.

Congratulations to the Indian Navy on the new ensign!

A quick thread on the verse in the Octagon seal, “Sham no Varunah”

The verse comes from the Seekshavalli section in the Taittiriya Upanishad of the Krishna Yajur Veda. #Thread
#IndianNavy
The verse is part of a longer Sloka in the Seekshavalli.

It starts with an invocation to Mitra, one of the Adityas, to whom Samba built the Sun Temple at Mulasthana (Multan)

As with several other places in the Vedas, especially Rig Veda, Mitra and Varuna are mentioned together in the verse,

“Sham no Mitrah, Sham Varunah”,

praying that the Adityas (sons of Aditi and Kashyapa), Mitra, and Varuna, bless us.
