"What the world’s governments have really learned from the pandemic is that they can ignore it. Many have simply stopped testing, stopped counting cases and deaths; after all, if you don’t count it, it doesn’t count." @TheTyeethetyee.ca/Analysis/2023/…
"Dropping non-pharmaceutical measures like masking may enhance the spread of COVID-19, but who will know without surveillance? " #bcpoli@CDCofBC@adriandix@Dave_Eby
"Dr. Daly, CMHO for @VCHhealthcare, was on @bctoday on May 5, the day WHO declared the end of the emergency. She encouraged listeners to think of #SARSCoV2 “like other respiratory viruses,” especially the coronaviruses that can cause common colds."
"Evidence suggests that #SARSCoV2 isn't just a respiratory virus. It can spread through the vascular system, forming blood clots, and the nervous system, dulling the senses of smell and taste as well as inflicting other kinds of brain damage."
"Unlike its cold-causing relatives, SARS-CoV-2 can cause long-lasting harm as well as death."
"But governments have learned that #LongCovid and other after-effects can be largely ignored, just like the fact that #SARSCoV2 is #Airborne."
"But we can’t expect to see such measures on a global or even national scale unless ordinary citizens demand them. They are unlikely to do that while our present authorities mislead us about the nature of the virus and urge us to get back to living our lives."
Thank you @Crof Thank you @TheTyee for not selling out.

Minister Dix and Dr. Henry said in a joint statement that "COVID-19 is no longer causing severe disease in most people."
But the BC COVID-19 situation report from April 23-29 reported 175 hospitalizations, 16 critical care admissions and 42 deaths.
“But if you actually look at what’s happening with hospitalizations, since Omicron subvariants emerged, it’s a giant wave that’s lasted not only much longer, but is also just as high as those we saw in 2021 or even higher at some points." @BlakeMMurdoch
“It’s like a high tide that’s always elevated, and this steadier state can mean a higher total burden over time.” Especially so given our 🇨🇦healthcare system has a low bed count per population compared to most OECD country. Meaning no slack in healthcare system.
It is suspicious that no outbreaks have been declared since January 20, 2022 in Vancouver Coastal Health (which has the most number of LTC facilities in BC) shortly after a letter stating outbreaks would be declared only at the discretion of the MHO.
Why do you feel like now is the appropriate time to drop masking in healthcare settings and LTC, Assisted Living homes?
Cc: "In some parts of the country masking in healthcare settings is still mandatory, but in most provinces it's not or won't be for long. While many welcome the shift, human rights groups are concerned & some are asking this question, why do you feel now is the appropriate time?"
BC's PHO says "mandatory masking in hospitals is being dropped based on #Covid levels in the community as we've come through the respiratory season. We're seeing much less spread of virus, there's much less community illness."
"In BC, updated calculations based on wastewater tests and other surveillance methods suggest one-in-250 people are getting a new infection daily."
"With a 10-day illness period, & five out of those 10 days being infectious, that means about 1-in-25 people are infected right now" Flawed basic assumption: infectiousness lasts > 5 days. @fionabrinkman
Regardless, aligns wt @MoriartyLab last week's 1/24 infected in BC. Now 1/12
The World Health Organization defines Long COVID as: “The continuation or development of new symptoms 3 months after the initial SARS-CoV-2 infection, with these symptoms lasting for at least 2 months with no other explanation”.
2/17
It is estimated that over 65 million people world wide have Long COVID.
Stats Canada estimates 14.8% of Canadians who have been infected with COVID have developed Long COVID.
