This week is #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek
Today’s short thread is about how living with #diabetes can affect psychological well-being🧵

Plus how #HCPs can effectively assess and support people living with the condition👩‍
1)
Living with #diabetes increases the risk of variable mental health conditions.
For this thread, we will be focusing on #depression , #anxiety and #diabetesdistress🔎 Image from Diabetes UK whic...
2)
The ‘Diabetes is Serious Report’ led by @DiabetesUK highlighted that almost half (47%) of people with #diabetes experience difficulties managing their condition.
Those from more deprived areas are at a higher risk🔼
The report is available at:

3)
This is partly due to people with #diabetes not having sufficient access to psychological support from their healthcare team.
In the @DiabetesUK report, 48% of GP’s and practice nurses highlighted more mental health concerns for #pwd than compared to before the pandemic.
4)
One of the key points highlighted is the need to embed emotional and psychological support in #diabetes care. Image of a page within the ...
5)
So how can #diabetes effect emotions?
This short video gives a great explanation from people living with the condition:
6)
Depression is the most common mental health condition experienced by #PWD🙁

It can have a significant impact on well-being, the ability to motivate and self-manage #diabetes.

The short video below highlights what it is like living with depression:
7)
@NICEComms states that it is important for #HCPs to be aware of possible depression if during the last month a person has often been bothered by:
- Feeling down, depressed or hopeless?
OR
- Having little interest or pleasure in doing things?
8)
The theme for #mentalhealthawarenessweek2023 is #Anxiety.

The condition comes in different forms and effects:
1 in 5 people with #t2dm using insulin.
1 in 6 people with #t2dm not using insulin.
1 in 6 people with #t1dm.

Here is a useful video:
9)
#diabetesdistress is a specific emotional response due to living with the condition.

It can affect 1 in 4 people with #t1dm and 1 in 5 people people with #t2dm.

Diabetes Distress can peak at times of heightened stress, and if left untreated can cause burnout.
10)
We created a short animated video illustrated by @katielambartist and narrated by @JamesRi81958925 to highlight #diabetesburnout:
11)
To assess for Diabetes Distress there are two useful validated questionnaires:
1⃣PAID Questionnaire (Problem Areas in Diabetes).
2⃣DDS (Diabetes Distress Scale).

12)
During individual diabetes consultations, it is important to sensitively discuss mental health.

#HCPs need to be aware that the language used during consultations can affect an individual’s willingness to engage in discussion🗣️
13)
Appropriate language can help to lower anxiety and build confidence.

Poor use of language can be stigmatising and detrimental.

The link below takes you to a useful document from @NHSEngland called 'Language Matters':

14)
Another useful video is from Dr Brene Brown called Empathy vs Sympathy.

- "Empathy fuels connection"
- "Sympathy drives disconnection"

15)
Before we finish...

To help raise further awareness we are offering #hcps FREE access to our package of six short psychological well-being online modules.

They are designed to increase knowledge and confidence.
