Google just announced its new ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ต. Hereโs what it is and how itโs going to change search forever.ย #thread๐งต
In the announcement, Google states:
Outside of a few well-made but rather vague demo videos, itโs difficult to tell. Google is allowing people to opt into Search Labs to get early access to generative AI experiments. However, as of the time of this writing, the opt-in appears broken.
Based on what Google is showing/saying: Theyโre going to attempt to get you the right answer, in its entirety, straight out of the gate. Instead of a list of links to comb through, weโre going to start getting a direct and almost conversational response to our questions.
Generative AI is meant to โdo the heavy lifting for youโ and then present links and resources for further exploration. In theory, this gives you the best of both worlds. The quick and easy answer along with citations for a more traditional search experience.
One critical question this brings up is the citation: How are these AI-generated answers offering credit back to the source content theyโre drawing from? Right now, it appears the answer is true across all AI platforms: They arenโt. ๐ซฅ
Even the most prolific creators are slated to become nameless, faceless nodes in the AI-driven networks as Google (and all AI tools) draw upon the ostensibly โopen sourceโ content available across the web, with no practical way to offer credit or citations.
I anticipate this lack of incentive to create quality content will have a huge impact long term. As the benefit of creating high-quality content diminishes (or gets eliminated entirely), the well of human-driven content creation will run dry.
Will the machines prove adequate replacements?
The piece that excites me the most about Googleโs generative AI is its โconversational modeโ which allows you to ask Google more about the topic youโre exploring. Imagine being able to talk to your search results.
And, as with #ChatGPT, generative AI is built with memory. Searches carry over from question to question, allowing Google to draw on important context when โdiscussingโ your questions and helping you solve your problems.
Generative AI also has a strong commercial component. All of the 35 billion products in Googleโs massive shopping feed are included in the catalog of options. Itโll be interesting to see how Google makes its recommendations and where they choose to monetize their inventory.
Google has yet to be clear on how #GoogleAds will participate in the journey. Mostly because they appear not to know, which makes sense. Theyโre going to roll out the core functionality first and then figure out where the monetization opportunities exist based on user behavior.
Why pay for traffic you may have (organically) gotten otherwise?ย
Because your competitor can always steal your traffic. Which means, you could have gotten MORE.
Weโre not talking about a new strategy here. Any decent agency or PPC manager knows that the #1 reason why you should bid on your brand is to protect it from being poached.
Iโve built three multi-million dollar agencies. From my experience, the single most important skill set required to be successful in the agency space has nothing to do with the actual work. Itโs a subset of client management and it will absolutely make or break your business. ๐งต
Communication is THE skill for building and scaling a successful agency. It is critical to build proper communication into your systems, training, evaluations, and culture. This is easier said than done which is why we created The 3 Cs of Communication.
My 17 years of experience as an employer have taught me a sad irony: The better someone is at their job, the worse they are at communication (generally speaking).
If you're measuring #PerformanceMax by the ROAS in your #GoogleAds account, you're missing half of the story.
PMax gives you more than what you're seeing. Remember that it runs heavy on YouTube, GSP (Gmail Sponsored Promotions), Display, and Discover.
There are non-click conversions that happen but never interacted on a click basis with Google Ads.
Look at your Analytics on the date when PMax campaign started until yesterday, and compare it to the previous period.
Look into your organic, direct, and referral traffic, email, and paid search.
Storytime thread ๐
When I was about eight years old, I was really good at chess. I would go to school, and during breaks, Iโd play with my classmates and beat them all.
Until Julius.
Turned out Julius was good. So good, in fact, he destroyed me. Four times. Consecutively.
The funny thing is Julius rarely played chess! So, I asked him how he was so good. He said, โMy dad taught me why and when to move each piece.โ
To be honest, I didnโt get it.
But now I realize he beat me, not because he was more experienced, but because he made better choices with whatever options he had.
