devotion to Krishna. His bhajans have been popular in Gujarat and Rajasthan for over 5 centuries. Narasingh was mute till the age of eight. He started speaking only after meeting a holy man who made him chant the phrase "Rade Shyam". Narasin and his wife Manekbai lived in the
house of his elder brother Panshidar, but Panshidar's wife treated them badly. She was a bad woman who mocked and humiliated Narasingh many times. One day, when her taunts and insults were too much for Narasingha, he left the house and went to a nearby forest to seek some peace,
where he fasted and meditated on a solitary Shiva lingam for seven days (some say seven days at the Gopnath Mahadev Mandir.) Pleased by his devotion, Shiva appeared before Narasimha and took him to Vrindavan, where he saw Krishna and the gopis dancing. There, lamp lighting
service to Sri Krishna and Gopis was given to him. He was so engrossed in seeing Krishna that he did not feel the burning of his hand by the flames in the lamps. His fame as a bhajan singer grew as he sang and danced the praises of Lord Sri Krishna with everyone irrespective of
gender, class and caste. His composition Vaishnava Janato was a favourite of Mahatma Gandhi and popular among freedom fighters across India.
