Many people loose hundreds of hours a year to #congestion.

πŸš™πŸš—πŸš›πŸ›»πŸš—πŸš™πŸššπŸš•πŸš™πŸš›πŸš—

For generations, government and council have tried to solve this problem by building more roads.

It hasn't worked.

It's time to rethink our approach to getting around our urban areas.

A 🧡 /1 A photo of a street in London showing both sides of the road full with cars and other motor vehicles.
🚘 #London's roads are the most congested in the world.

😷 It causes dangerous #AirPollution across the city which is damaging the health of millions of Londoners.

🀦 Successive Labour and Conservative Mayor's have failed to tackle this problem.

/2bbc.com/news/uk-englan…
But:

Only 20% of Londoners commute by car

and

41% of #London households have no car at all.

But the city is designed around motorists.

Nearly 20,000 hectares (12.4% of land)Β is taken up by roads.

/3 An aerial photo of a large roundabout junction in Central London. There is only a bus and three commercial vehicles in the photo. It shows the amount of space taken up by roads.
You'd think under this @MayorofLondon - who talks big about tackling #AirPollution - things would change.

Well, no.

🚌 Nearly 1,000 London buses cut since 2017

πŸ’° Β£BILLIONS being spent to build Silvertown Tunnel, a road tunnel (@SilvertownTn)

⚑ #ElectricVehicles are often talked about as the solution to this problem.

🚘 Electric cars may produce less local pollution - but still require an enormous amount of energy and carbon.

πŸš™ A traffic jam of electric vehicles is still a traffic jam.

/5
So what is the solution?

🚌 Better, more reliable and affordable #PublicTransport.
🚲 Safe, segregated cycle routes that are joined up.
🌳 Good quality, pleasant public space where people want to walk.

Across the world, cities are doing this.

"Cities should not just build green transport but actively dismantle car infrastructure"

@PhinHarper @dezeen Cities that are less dependent on cars are happier, healthier and safer.

We need policies that are going to reverse decades of car-centric #UrbanPlanning.

πŸ’Έ Millions of people in the UK can't afford to own cars, or can't drive for whatever reason.

πŸ›‘ The lack of non-car options means they are trapped around where they live.

🚍 Getting around needs to more affordable, which means less focus on cars.

πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡

theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/j…
I've seen people today say anti-car policies are "anti-working class".

Not only is that not true, it's actually the opposite. Car ownership is expensive.

Car-centric #transport policies are forcing drivers to spend up to a fifth of pre-tax income on running a car.

/2 A graphic showing the cost of car ownership: Β£166 Vehicle Excise Do it ty Β£1206 Fuel Β£936 Car Insurance Β£613 MOT, Services and Repairs Β£2922 Total (not including parking, leasing)
Not only that, but the money we pay for car ownership ends up in the pockets of big business:

πŸš™ The automotive industry
β›½ Fuel companies
πŸ—οΈ Big construction companies (who make money on road building and the development caused by urban sprawl)

The figure Β£1.6billion is being used to refer to the fiasco linked to the #BibbyStockholm.

But surely this isn't how much the government is paying to hire a single barge?!

Well. It's not.

The reality is worse.

A short 🧡 #asylum

independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…
The government has awarded a two year contract worth Β£1.6billion to an Australian firm called Corporate Travel Management (CTM).

The contract covers a few (no evidence of what precise number is) asylum accommodation ships - the Stockholm Bibby is just the first.

But who are Corporate Travel Management?

According to their website, CTM are:

"a global leader in business travel management services. We drive savings, efficiency and safety to businesses and their Corporate Travel Management all around the world"

In fact, Growing demand for SUVs was the second largest contributor to the increase in global CO2 emissions from 2010 to 2018. #pollution

The increase in global #emissions from SUVs was more than heavy industry, shipping and #aviation

But there's more

β›½ Oil consumption from SUVs reached 5.5 million barrels per day in 2020.

πŸš— Emissions from SUVs have nearly tripled over the past decade.

⚑ Even electric SUVs contribute to pollution through higher amount of particulates from tyres.
