60 years ago #OTD Aleksander Ładoś passed away. Ładoś, Poland's wartime envoy to Switzerland, operated an illegal scheme of providing Jews with fake Latin American passports. He and his men contributed to rescuing thousands of people including Anne Frank's best friend. 1/3 THREAD Image
Supported by his diplomats from @PLinSwitzerland and in cooperation with @WorldJewishCong & Agudath Yisrael, Ładoś supervised what seems to be one of the largest #Holocaust rescue operations. We estimate "Ładoś passports" may have been distributed to as many as 10,000 people. 2/3 Image

Yesterday @LukaszAdamskiPL posted shocking documents proving that the Soviets, during the reconciliation with the Polish Gov't in exile (1941-43) applied racial criteria to deny Polish Jews right to serve in the Polish Army. Let me explain this story. Slowly. #THREAD 1/11
Poland was divided by the Nazi Germany and Soviet Union in 1939. Both countries unilateraly annexed part of prewar Polish territory. But in June 1941 a war broke between them and they became enemies. Under pressure from 🇬🇧🇺🇸 the Soviets recognized Poland's gov't in exile 2/11
The recognition did not mean, however, the Soviets recognized the territorial integrity of Poland. They still believed Eastern part of prewar Poland was theirs. They recognized ethnic Poles as citizens of the Polish State, but denied it to Ukrainians, Belorussians & Jews. 3/11

The Israeli newspaper quotes documents and admits, the operations by Ambassador Ładoś were orchestrated by the Government of Poland and were not an individual action. Ładoś risked his life, but it was the @PolandMFA and @PremierRP who authorized him. 2/7

W archiwum @PLinSwitzerland znaleźliśmy oryginalny, legalny, polski paszport przedłużony w 1941 przez Rokickiego!

Pismo łatwe do rozpoznania plus jego podpis.

Dokument ma wielkie znaczenie archiwalne i muzealne, ale wymaga renowacji.

Ta historia nie ma końca... #Thread 1/5
Wcześniej nigdy nie udało nam się odnaleźć podobnego skarbu.

Konsul Rokicki odpowiedzialny był za wydawanie prawie wszystkich paszportów RP w Bernie od 1940 do połowy 1945 roku. Jedyne dwa podobne dokumenty, o których istnieniu wiemy, znajdowały się do tej pory w Izraelu. 2/5
Polskie paszporty Rokickiego wydawane legalnie w konsulacie RP w Bernie i paszporty Paragwaju sfałszowane przez niego dla ratowania Żydów, mają ten sam charakter pisma. W ten sposób w 2017 roku odkryto, że Rokicki był fałszerzem z Berna. W 2019 uznał to instytut @yadvashem . 3/5
