One story that fell under the radar this week but is super important: The Supreme Court preserved the Americans with Disabilities Act while also outlining how it will get the ADA in the future. Let’s be clear! George Santos didn’t need to yell and make a scene. I was asking him about Jim Jordan’s speaker bid and whether he could get to 217. He CHOSE to yell at the guy who kept a pretty even tone and approach. He did this to get attention and deflect. Santos did this to bait everyone. And you know what? It worked! He baited me! Immediately, reporters moved on him instead of covering the speaker race. He played everyone, including me, for a fool by creating a sideshow. We shouldn’t give him what he wants.

Ok. So I gathered my thoughts because I didn’t want to mouth off. On one end, this is good because it means #ActuallyAutistic Black and Latino kids are getting diagnosed. On the other end, I worry this will lead to autism being stigmatized and therefore kids won’t get services Autism has historically been seen as a condition that affects upper-class white folks. Leo Kanner in his first study of autism featured nine WASP families and two Jewish families. All of them had elite parents. Well, guess who could afford to send their kids to be observed?

Conservative opposition to disability has shifted. In the 1980s to the 2000s, conservatives mostly hated accommodating people with disabilities because of regulations big business. Now it's more about "owning the libs" and not wanting them in public space. Under the old style of former iteration of conservatism, adaptable clothing would be welcomed: Government doesn't need to mandate accessibility. The Market will innovate! Now, it's about not wanting to see them at all.

Interesting discussion I had with Mama Garcia (who turned 60 earlier this month) when she visited. When I mentioned how Democrats appeal to college-educated voters, she was confused because growing up, they voted for Republicans because college-educated voters made money. A lot of people are tweeting about Jack Black supporting Autism Speaks. Rather than digging at Jack Black for supporting it, I think it's important to explain WHY Autism Speaks has become so prominent and why so many autistic people find it dispiriting. Galatians 5:13 specifically says "For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." I keep my faith quiet on here because I am still a work in progress. I fail constantly. I also don't want people to use my sins as an argument against the Gospel. But I always believed that while Jesus's dying for my sins saved me, it compels me to do good in the world.

As an #ActuallyAutistic person, I think about how to deal with positive change. I was talking with @autienelle about how writing a book has changed my life for the better. But it also upended my life. I don’t know how to talk about it without sounding ungrateful. I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to do this and anytime I hear from people who reach out and read the book and say it helped, it makes my week. I am also more financially secure than I’ve ever been in my lifetime. At the same time, my life is very different now.

President Biden announcing the end of the pandemic purely for political reasons, combined with the failure of to pass SSI reform AND the death of home and commmunity-based services spending, it's pretty fair to say people with disabilites won't see anything change post-Covid-19. Some people ripped me when I said that home care was dead earlier this year, but it was dead as soon as Manchin killed Build Back Better and Democrats slashed it long before BBB died. Policy changes necessitate political moments. Covid was the only time this could pass.
