Okay so this is an attempt to jinx away any serious SARS-CoV-2 variants named after constellations (the current planned supplemental list after Greek letters are exhausted).

Just ignore this thread. They will never be relevant hopefully 🤞🤞🤞 Me: Gosh, it'll sure be nice to travel again.
Andromeda Variant: Not so fast...

"An issue was discovered in the character definitions of the Unicode Specification through 14.0."

An issue "discovered" in Unicode "through 14.0".

Are they expecting Unicode to remove eg "Ѕ CYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER DZE" in 15.0? Image Both relevant CVEs on @MITREcorp:

Odd. Twemoji still has images for (but doesn't support) the deprecated Emoji 3.0 multi-person skin tone sequences.

The savvy Twitter user knows to always try to use #PascalCase (upper camel case) for hashtags, since hashtags are (ideally) case-insensitive: #MayThe4th The case insensitivity is such that these should all be aliased:

The #covid19 hashtag keeps mutating.

A novel form appeared around Feb 11th using U+30FC PROLONGED SOUND MARK for structure: #COVIDー19 [cc @katestarbird]

It looks like another strain is going viral now: #Covid_19

Be sure to practice social media isolation. Tweet 70% ethanol. Image Some prominent people have caught the #COVIDー19 hashtag variant, and are exposing others to it.

Time for a grumpy Twitter rant.

Our other older account is @badphysics, which is more of a general "weird Twitter" account with a science/STEM bent.

Two weeks ago that account was "temporarily restricted" when attempting to tweetstorm original photos of broken umbrellas. "Your account appears to have exhibited automated behavior that violates the Twitter Rules."

It was neither automated nor rule violating. BUT the only option given was to supply a phone number.

Now, this was like 6 weeks after this thing: techcrunch.com/2019/12/24/twi…

⍰ Unicode Tofu Review ⍰

Something nobody asked for but we'll do it anyway.

Tofu (named because it is usually white boxes) is what you see when there is no font support for the current glyph in your font stack, which can vary by family (serif/sans/mono) and application. The technical term is (in most cases) .notdef, in PostScript, TrueType/OpenType fonts, etc.
docs.microsoft.com/en-us/typograp…

Most of the time, what you see comes from the .notdef in one of your fontstack fonts. But, sometimes it is custom to the application.

Because it keeps coming up, how about a thread on Emoji in passwords. So we (and you) can link to it in the future.

Should they be allowed? For all practical purposes they can't not be. So, yes.

Should they be heavily warned against? Yes.

But why? Well... First off, there are a lot of bad password policies out there. Mostly by services that probably store your password as plain text. The recent NIST recommendations suggest allowing Unicode, but normalized. pages.nist.gov/800-63-3/sp800…

This would normalize e + ¨ to ë, for example...

All the hot takes about gender-neutral emoji (summarized: "THEIR ARE ONLY TO GENDERS, I LERND THAT WHEN I WAS THREE") are mad for the wrong reason. The gender neutral ones just mean "It doesn't matter. This is just a person".

They'll /really/ be pissed when/if enbies are added. If for some reason you want to see the vitriol, scroll down to the replies for this tweet:

More brand shaming for using Mathematical Alphanumerics.

We can't wait for a Mathematical Alphanumerics flavor Oreo.

(Also, don't use them for accessible communication)
