E day for #BatABC and I didn’t want to be THAT guy. I didn’t. But here we are.

Ectophylla alba

Everyone’s favorite forbidden neotropical marshmallow, the Honduran white bat has a striking appearance which perfectly hides it in its leaf tents

©️Konrad Wothe
©️Piotr Naskrecki “How is white and yellow perfect for hiding it in a green leaf?” So glad you’re here to ask the important questions. When light filters through the Heliconia, it casts a green hue over the bats’ white fur

“Worldwide, cats kill an estimated 250,000 bats per year. Domestic cats who do not need bats for nutrition will hunt them for sport: since cats can hear their echolocation calls, they must make a tantalizing squeaky toy. “Unfortunately, feline fun wounds bats so badly that they either die or fall victim to secondary predators, such as foxes in the UK. Feral cats hunt bats for food, as evidenced by a cat trapped and killed in rural New Zealand in 2010.

I'm genuinely glad you brought this up!

A sincere, non-dragging thread explaining the incorrect but v common idea: "bats started all of this COVID-19 mess" 1/ Bats. They're rad.

They ride the wind with membranes attached to their long, skinny fingers and (sometimes) tail; they go around screaming all the time & somehow that helps them see; the title 🏆 of Smallest Mammal in the 🌎 & Fastest Flyer in the 🌎 is found amongst them 2/

@Pontifex On the contrary Holy Father, the darkness brings to the bat precisely that which it DOES want to face, not what it doesn’t. Bats are not under the cover of night committing crimes for which it should be ashamed, but providing invaluable services to our ecosystems and communities. @Pontifex Bats pollinate a wide range of flowers and trees that give entire countries their goods for export; they eat literal tons of bugs per night and save farmers millions of $$ in pesticides, which also improves the quality of our food; they spread seed & help reforest after disaster.

Ever heard of ‘em? They were a weapon the U.S. intended to use against Japan in World War II and, as the name suggests, they were bombs delivered by our friends: the bat. A thread. 1/

#bats #history #WWII #savethebats #lovebats #GiveBatsABreak Image The idea of a bat bomb was born in the imagination of a dental surgeon, Lytle S. Adams, who wrote that bats were “the lowest form of animal life” and therefore found their highest calling in helping the U.S. win the war with Japan. (📸 2/ Image
