I am not against cars. I own a car.
What I’m actually against is a world designed where cars are the only way to get around.
I’m against a transportation system that forces people to spend $1300 a month for a vehicle that sits parked and unused 95% of its lifespan.
The death of Gaudreau and his brother is tragic. And people are rightly placing blame on the drunk driver who hit them.
HOWEVER:
… the fault isn’t just with the drunk driver…
🧵
We also must blame Gaudreau’s death on the lack of respect for cycling, to the point where politicians actively campaign *against* safe infrastructure for cyclists because they’re worried about constituents complaining that they have to share the road with other users.

The most difficult aspect of this situation is that there’s no space for nuance. Being against the oppression of Palestinians makes you a pro-terrorist anti-Semite, and abhoring the killing of Israeli civilians makes an Islamophobic colonizer.
And that space is shrinking.
For most political and ideological conflicts, one side or the other builds enough political support in order to quiet down the other. But in the Middle East, the conflict has only heightened some of the most extreme groups on both sides.

People often think I’m anti-car.
I’m not against the car. I literally own a car. One that I bought new just a few years ago that I really enjoy driving.
What I’m against is the convenience of the car being at the centre of how we’ve designed our society.
I want public streets where I can just meander with my young nieces and nephews, window shop or sit on a patio, and not have to worry about them being hit by a vehicle.

Here are a few facts from @henrygrabar’s new book on parking that really illustrate how much we’ve built our communities around cars instead of around people.
Buckle your seatbelts and hold on tight!
Here we go…
“More square footage is dedicated to parking each car than to housing each person.”
