ChemE faculty candidates: Most departments are now doing Zoom interviews (20-60 minutes) as a screen prior to making invitations for full long format interviews. Here are a few things I wish every candidate knew. Let's roll: 1. If you aren't given clear directions in advance, it is OK to ask. "would you like me to prepare anything in advance?" , "can you share the approximate number of questions and length of the interview?" , etc. We want you to be well prepared and clarifying Q are welcome!

NSF CAREER proposals are due in about 5 months. Now is the time to start planning! I wanted to share a bit about what I think is the most common mistake in CAREER proposals I have reviewed: misunderstanding "integrating research and education" and "broader impacts" (1/n) All NSF proposals have at least two "merit review criteria": intellectual merits and broader impact. You should understand the difference because if you do not, your reviewers will not. Read more about them here: nsf.gov/pubs/policydoc… (2/n)

Our NSF ADVANCE program is putting on a webinar about faculty hiring in a virtual environment that I am attending. Thread here of observations. #AcademicTwitter The hosts are Chad Allen and Joyce Yen from UW. I can confirm they are the best (this is a biased opinion)

Faculty hiring 2020 is coming. Yes there will be TT jobs available. Yes there will be many fewer than last year. Should you apply this year? Wait it out? Give up altogether? A few thoughts (1/n) #AcademicChatter #phdchat Now more than ever you need your mentors to help you make this decision. Your PI, PhD committee, other trusted faculty are all great resources but even more - they can put you in contact with dept heads and chairs who can give you more insight. (2/n)

Hey @AcademicChatter, here is a laundry list of things we've done in @UWChemE to transition to all online education and nearly all staff teleworking. I suggest department chairs and associate deans plan in advance and be proactive vs reactive (1/18) 1) Have your IT staff develop zoom (or whatever you use) trainings now. We have done specific zoom trainings for staff, TA’s and faculty. The TA training is essential so they understand how to support the faculty (e.g., muting all microphones, handling questions, etc). @Johnath00165665, this is my take on what we informally call 'chalk talk' in faculty interviews in ChemE. I believe it is pretty representative of research active eng departments. I also note that this is a personal reflection unrelated to my job as chair (1/n) @AcademicChatter 1. Understand the purpose of the chalk talk. You are pitching several things at once:
I] Big picture: where will your research program be when you go for tenure
II] Medium: what are the science problems you will address to get you there
III] Granular: show some details (2/n)
