My mom died a year ago today.

Grief, at the start, was overwhelming. What helped? Sharing stories with my sons, husband, dad and sister. Small gifts of kindness from friends who shared memories of her & were brave to ask how I was doing. Walks. The wind in my face on my bike. Reading mom’s gratitude journal - such a special gift she left us. Seeing a psychologist.

And giving myself permission to cry. Medicine has taught me to prioritize others’ needs, to “hold it together”, to push my feelings down, to rationalize, to compartmentalize.
