Writing ab #young people in #Ukraine based on focus group discussions before #RussiaUkraineWar has been an agonising travel in time. But w/ @FESonline we thought it is important to convey the hopes and frustrations expressed in Dnipro and Lviv. library.fes.de/pdf-files/buer… Protecting the distinct Ukrainian national identity is seen as a priority in both cities. Participants underline the departure from Soviet values, the importance of the Ukrainian language & culture as well as opposition to Russia.

Anyone still interested to know what #young #Russia|ns think ab their country? Focus groups conducted in St. Petersburg & Samara w/ @FESonline illustrate the internal migration by the alleged “generation Putin” already before #RussiaUkraineWar. library.fes.de/pdf-files/buer… Seen from the eyes of young Russians, Europe represents a horizon that symbolises a better life in many ways. But this horizon has retreated ever further over the last decade. Many also state that they feel excluded from Europe.

Young people in #Russia, beyond our biased circles of friends, have turned into a black box for (Western) researchers. In @NationalitiesP @Nina_Friess & myself interpret focus groups from 2019, several surveys, films & literature to assess what young people make of World War II Image We observe significant overlap btw what young people think ab victory in World War II #ДеньПобеды & prevailing political discourse. Still, there is controversy around the regime’s abuse of history, the role of Stalin & how to remember (or not) violence against civilians.

Hard to research public opinion in #Russia right now. Only data –to my knowledge- is from state-pollster VTsIOM. Allegedly, #Russia|ns are overwhelmingly behind “special military operation” #RussiaUkraineWar. Finally took the time to take a closer look at the data 🧵 First thing to note is that the sample is quite distorted. For instance, 58% of respondents are male, which indicates that non-response rate must have been high, questioning overall what type of person actually dared to share their view.
