“As of Monday coming, the Minister for Justice is going to make an application in the High Court seeking an order under the Act which will require the retention of mobile phone data on everyone, you, me, the entire citizenry, for an extended period of time, including our whereabouts, who we called, texted and so on.
To do that, the application will be ex parte, in camera, [one sided, in private] none of us will have visibility into the arguments before the High Court judge who will hear the application, none of us know who the judge is.”

Twice in a week the Times publishes what others are accused of publishing.
First they mid-state their own poll result on NATO to grossly inflate support for joining that body. Today they publish this, reversing the truth about who resigned after a gross Ministerial insult to the President in 1976.

An Tánaiste @MichealMartinTD stayed for almost the entire forum @UCC today, paying close attention throughout. He is wrong to say - as he did just now on @rtenews - that the view that there is a serious imbalance on the panels overall is confined to "the far left."
It's not. That criticism made, there was much of value said and questioned today. The range of people in the room was impressively wide and diverse, something the floor contributions during the four sessions showed.

Breaking: Ratification of CETA unconstitutional. Supreme Court. Patrick Costello TD succeeds in a hugely significant vindication of citizens' rights and their place in the constitutional architecture of Ireland.

The court judgments will need close reading. There may be a legislative path to legitimate ratification, avoiding a referendum.

WWN: The government celebrated its confidence vote win by ramming through a planning bill which every single interested party that isn’t a money grabbing developer has labeled ‘a disaster’. @WhisperNewsLTD
waterfordwhispersnews.com/2022/07/13/gov… WWN smashes embargo😂
The vote doesn't happen until after debate that begins this evening at 7.09pm & ends around half nine.
The government hammered through the suspension of standing orders earlier today - a move needed because the late changes are o/s the scope of the Bill.

Decisions of ABP can be struck down by the Court.
There is an exceptionally short time limit to get Court permission to mount a case - just eight weeks from decision date.
That period may be extended by a Judge for 'good and sufficient reason'.

irishexaminer.com/news/arid-4091… This week the Govt is pushing 'urgent' amendments to the Planning Act. They could propose allowing more allegedly tainted decisions to be reviewed by the Court.
Instead as Fred Logue shows, they are making Court challenges even harder.
Who benefits?

Political control of what should be a Public Health-led response in a public health emergency carries problems.

In media terms, one is that pre-eminence is given to politicians arguing over the merits of public health measures, to the exclusion of our Public Health Doctors.👇 Fortunately, several of our Public Health Consultants have been given scope in some newspapers and many have availed too of social media to alert the public to their views. @irishexaminer @businessposthq notable here.

Not heard so on RTÉ, with one or two exceptions.
