Apropos of nothing in particular: the collective behavior implications of an airborne virus are, in fact, very different indeed from those of a virus whose transmission requires close exchange of fluids. Our collective choices to say "fuck it" to mitigation measures has, in fact, left entire classes of people with the choice between foregoing vital care, services, and basic public participation, and risking getting an infection that might well kill them.

Academic Hiring Derby, Presented by Yum! Brands To earn a starting berth, you must earn enough points in qualifying races. However, we will officially deny this is the case, and we will not explicitly tell you how to enter and win said races, or what they are.

Okay, storytime. I may have told this one before, but bear with me.

When I first moved to St. Louis for my previous position, I naively thought I'd be fine just having a GP continuing to provide my relatively stable dose. And I naively assumed people were less asinine about it. I get to the office, and when the doctor comes in, I see that he is visibly disabled--and, once again naively, assume he'll be cool about this.

Ok, #VandyJudaismMed. We're going to try Twitter "lectures" for the first time this week. Buckle in! 1/ This week's theme is "gender and disability in rabbinic texts." For your primary text at the beginning of the week, you studied M. Ketubot 7:7-8, about a set of social and/or physical conditions that invalidate marriage contracts unless otherwise specified. 2/

A set of things that are true:
Christian hegemony and anti-Jewish violence over the course of almost two millennia are real and indelible, and continue to do serious harm.
Christian appropriations of Jewish ritual objects and practices are also real and continuing. 1/ There is genuine continuity between present-day Judaisms, modern and early modern Judaisms, medieval Judaisms, Rabbinic Judaisms, 2nd Temple Judaisms, and pre-2nd Temple Israelite culture and practice. 2/
