Late night trawling of govt energy and emissions docs. A lazy unplanned thread👇 This was the newish Labor's govt's emissions projections in Dec 2022. "Additional measures" the estimated impact of govt policy.

Small size of the cut speaks for itself, but note also it doesn't get to the target.

(projections are dodgy. just saying)

A year and a half after the govt put gas executives in charge of the COVID Commission, and weeks after COP26, we have today a new national plan to subsidise gas pipelines across Australia.

Here's the report, lowlights threaded

energy.gov.au/publications/2… From the exec summary "Gas supplies are likely to fall short of domestic ///and export/// demand by the end of the decade if further action to unlock supply and deliver key infrastructure is not taken by industry"

Ie - subsidies to prop up bad investments in export terminals

higher petrol prices must have people thinking more about EVs. does anyone know, or have a simple modelling tool, for how much petrol prices impact the payback period for EVs? obviously depends on lots of things - better fuel economy of alternative means less impact, amount of kms driven means more impact, etc.

Report just dropped, into the Beetaloo gas grants scheme and the #RortFiredRecovery. Rolling thread as I work through it parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo/downl… This report is a majority report, backed by the Labor and Greens Senators.

Straight off the bat:

Guardian blog reporting that Labor will vote to SUPPORT the government's Beetaloo #RortFiredRecovery

$21m to a company
- neck deep in the Liberal party,
- wined and dined Taylor and his head fundraiser,
- NT govt said was not eligible for the $

backed by ALP. Senate has the chance to stop this rort to Liberal mates. Is the ALP really going to support it? #RortFiredRecovery

Clearest explanation I've heard of what Doherty modelling actually says and doesn't say just now from ACT Chief Minister.

Will be months before thresholds met and even then, "Broad brush talk of 'open up' does not mean there will no public health response". Also, crucially, we are not starting from where the modelling starts - it assumes no/ v low outbreaks, not current situation

Fossil fuel subsidies in #Budget21 :
- money for billionaire Twiggy Forest's gas generator.
- more for other gas gens.
- subsidies to new gas basins.
- subsidies for oil.

#FundOurFutureNotGas #auspol Fossil fuel subsidies apparently the best examples of "economic resilience", presented without irony immediately above funding for disaster response funding.

New gas subsidies today announced alongside the interim 'National Gas Infrastructure Plan' - a plan for more, far bigger subsidies.

Modelling from the same people who brought you the COVID Commission recommendations for massive gas subsidies.

Thread
energy.gov.au/sites/default/… 'National Gas Infrastructure Plan':

🏭No mention of emissions, climate change.
🏭No mention of industrial electrification.
🏭"Solutions" all assume more gas.
🏭Minor residential demand reduction in only one scenario.
🏭Rejects AEMO's 'baseline' for apparently no reason.

Landholders oppose gas pipeline proposed on their land, call on candidates in #UpperHunterVotes to back them not gas companies.

Santos asked govt to subsidise the pipeline, would link their Narrabri gas field to Kurri Kurri publicly funded generator.

singletonargus.com.au/story/7232183/… The pipeline is so toxic no party candidate will support it outright, with both Nat and Labor candidates expressing concerns about poor consultation and farmer opposition and wanting it rerouted. Greens oppose outright. #UpperHunterVotes northerndailyleader.com.au/story/7218651/…

Settling in to livetweet #4Corners right now, thread below .@m_brisso asks "Why is the government so insistent on ignoring the dissenters" - that is, almost everyone - "and pushing ahead" with gas subsidies ?

Andrew Liveris, of "subsidise gas for plastics and chemicals" infamy, is a director of the Saudi Arabian oil company. New FOI docs show his work for NCC was secretly backed by a lobbying firm that was working for the Saudi govt. theguardian.com/australia-news… Liveris is also on the board of Worley Parsons, Australia's largest oil and gas services company. The head of the lobbying firm, Dragoman, was also registered as a lobbyist for Worley.

Weapons of Gas Destruction - a major new report from me @TheAusInstitute out today.

Australia has a huge amount of gas in the pipeline and in the ground. If it gets burnt, we're all in big trouble.

A thread on some findings. Report here: tai.org.au/content/weapon… Image Australia is the world's largest LNG exporter and one of the largest fossil gas producers in the world.

Australia caused most of the LNG growth over the last decade and more than any other country over the last 20 years. Image

Energy Department admits the 'Tech Roadmap' is full of literal thought bubbles based on 'expert judgement' and not based on analysis.

Favourable treatment of gas vs renewables ensured by assumptions that ignore best modelling.
reneweconomy.com.au/federal-govern… 'expert judgement' with no analysis is a fancy way of saying they made it up.

No wonder they ignored my requests for the underlying assumptions and then fought against my FOI

CEFC changes today: government wants to take an organisation that is making a profit for the public by investing inrenewables and energy efficiency, and remodel it so it makes loss by funding fossil fuels. Cool and normal! parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo/downl… Cool

Australian LNG industry is absolutely cooked right now.

A rolling thread (June) One in three tankers loaded with cargoes of Australian liquefied natural gas last month is either anchored at sea or taking a longer-than-usual journey to its destination as coronavirus prompts more buyers to delay deliveries.

Just caught up on #FightForPlanetA - great first episode!

Especially great to see Chevron's Gorgon failed CCS scandal getting proper national airing. Hopefully WA government forces them to make good.

Check my original research on that here: tai.org.au/content/gorgon… Image Gorgon was legally required to sequester millions of tonnes of CO2. CCS failed for three years, pushing our emissions up. They faced no penalty. The federal 'safeguard mechanism' is so cooked the missions limit for Gorgon actually assumed CCS failed theguardian.com/environment/20…

Covid commission wants the government to underwrite the gas mining that the private sector won't pay for. This is utterly crazy. smh.com.au/politics/feder… The leaked draft report: subsidise gas.

The Commission's chair: oh we don't necessarily agree with that.

The leaked final draft report: no really subsidise gas!!
