Public service announcement:

Don’t let elected officials, big funding bodies or organisations you work with dim down your light, gaslight you into believing your ideas are ‘too radical’ or ‘unrealistic’!

Let me tell you this for free.. There is nothing at all radical about everyone having access fo a fully funded and just education system.

To all my non black friends,
I, like every black sibling, is hurting.
We feel a pain & suffering that runs centuries deep, that you will never understand!

I don’t need a ‘Are you okay text’ I need you to read & develop critical consciousness especially in state violence! https://t.co/Gwpt6VLG4v

NUS COVID19 April Update 🧵:

Since our last communication regarding NUS' plan to support students during this crisis, we’ve heard of so many tragic stories from the frontline and within our communities. With great sadness, I report that we have also lost a wonderful family member from our student movement. I want to firstly pay tribute to Ruth Southall, who has sadly passed away. Ruth was the Representation Development Manager at @UoNSU.

NUS COVID19 Update🧵:

These past few weeks have been unprecedented in the history of the student movement. The Covid-19 pandemic shutting down our institutions & indeed our entire country has made more confusion, uncertainty and fear endemic to the lives of every student. Tomorrow I will be presenting an emergency motion to #nusconference / #nusnc2020 that sets out @nusuk’s guiding principles as we respond to this crisis. So I felt I should update you on the number of actions we’ve taken since the start of this crisis.

🧵#IWD: I spent international Womens day with the most incredible woman in my life, my mother!

The Zamzam you all know, was carefully crafted by my hooyo. She never let me give up, she never let me make up excuses and she always taught me to stand up for what I believe in. 1/6 Image Even when she watched her daughter receive death threats, she told me to rise above it. When people told me I wasn’t good enough, she made me show them a million reasons why I was. #IWD 2/6

(So here are *MY* Post election thoughts)

I really struggled to pen some thoughts down, I’ve never been heartbroken before but I imagine this is what it feels like. In this election result we normalised homelessness, ignored poverty in the UK, & we’ve handed our country to billionaires who live in the south of France & have their riches in the Cayman Islands. A minority that see us, the majority, as illegitimate & undeserving of dignity.

I haven’t tweeted my whereabouts in a while, so on my train journey to London for the BHM: Black women rising panel with the incredible @Rakhiaismail at City SU organised by @saq_217
Let me give ya’ll an update off the busy but inspiring few days I have had on the road! Image I spent my weekend in Dublin at @FEMYSO GA, where I met some incredible & talented Muslim leaders from across Europe. I was so humbled to have been invited to address the challenges facing European Muslim Activists alongside @ferithafez and @jcarr1975! ImageImage

I came to Manchester for #CPC19. I had every intention of proudly representing millions of students across our country. However, as President of @nusuk and a Muslim woman I cannot in good conscience participate in a Conference that openly denies the existence of Islamophobia. Yesterday, I was horrified to see reports of what was sickening Islamophobia arising from an official Tory Party fringe entitled ‘Challenging Islamophobia’. Here, panelists denied the existence of anti-Muslim bigotry and toasted to their being labelled ‘Islamophobe of the Year’.

Today 100,000 people took the streets of Westminster demanding radical policy reform. From the beaches of Soloman islands, the roads of Melbourne to the streets of Westminster, we echoed the same message! ImageImage Across the seas, over mountains, through deserts, we are the generation that will unapologetically put humanity at the very top of the agenda. We will not rest until the Government has heard our message; The Time to Act is now!

Yesterday I got to co-host the #YouthClimateTakeOver with the incredible Zoe. What an energising and important day. To have so many young people taking action for the global youth strikes! Big ups to amnesty for pulling this together w/ the help of so many orgs ❤️ Image And as I was heading home, I saw some of the Young people that cam. Acting on the call to action by leaftleting in kings cross 👏🏾👏🏾 #legends #ClimateStrikes #YouthClimateTakeover Image

Two weeks ago I spent some time in Northern Ireland where students told me about what a no deal Brexit could mean for them. For them, No Deal Brexit is not a political game, a bluff or bargaining chip, it's a threat to their prosperity, economy, and relationship to their neighbours in the south.

Congratulations to each and every student who is receiving their results today on #ALevelResults2019. Our Education system could be one that is a transformative & empowering experience for every single person that dreams of learning. But to get there we first, need to dream big! Imagine: An education system that breaks down all barriers in your way. Where you can be a doctor, lawyer, nurse or mechanic regardless of the 000’s in your families bank account.
