The agreement reached at #COP27, imperfect as it may be, moves us forward in implementing the Paris Agreement. But what this COP made clear is that we need greater ambition. Recommitting to the 1.5°C target is an important outcome of #COP27, but it is the bare minimum. (1/4) I applaud the progress made to support countries that are facing the worst impacts of this crisis through a fund for loss and damage. This agreement is historic and morally just. But this work cannot be the obligation of governments alone. (2/4)

One of the most important lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic is that when scientists are warning about a looming threat, we all ought to listen.

Today, the @IPCC_CH is once again sounding the alarm on the climate crisis and their warning is clearer than ever. The consequences of continuing to spew greenhouse gases into the atmosphere have never been starker. We've seen devastating heatwaves, historic droughts, & wildfires and floods that have wiped out entire towns. Today's @IPCC_CH report shows that this is part of our new normal.

15 years ago today, one million people in the Gulf region were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. 1,833 lives were lost, with 40 percent due to drowning. That day made painfully clear our reality: the climate crisis is on our doorstep. 1/4 As #HurricaneLaura overwhelms the Gulf Coast, it's now painfully clear how supercharged these storms are by rising global temps. At the same time, we are fighting multiple interconnected crises - the pandemic, systemic racism & voter suppression among them. 2/4

In his speech today, the President erroneously pointed to natural gas as a clean energy solution. Fracking is a losing game – it produces a dangerous carbon fuel that’s worsening the climate crisis. 1/4 Partly due to pervasive leaks, natural gas is just as bad as coal, heating up our planet and polluting our communities. Anything less than urgent support for clean energy solutions and the jobs they create is grossly irresponsible and a failure of leadership. 2/4

As clean renewable energy continues to grow at an unprecedented pace, the highest emitting countries are driving toward their #ParisAgreement commitments. In 2017, more than half of new electricity capacity in each of the top 4 carbon emitters came from #wind & #solar. In China (28% of global emissions), wind + solar = 55% of new electricity capacity in 2017, according to @rhodium_group: bit.ly/2rOuD2K
