Hey academic presenters, want to wow your audience and make your presentation stand out?

Here are 5 foundational things you should be doing to nail your next talk! First up, know your audience.

When it comes to your topic
- what do they know?
- how do they feel?
- why should they care?

This will help you tailor your presentation and make it more engaging for them.

Don't just reuse an old talk every time.

How to open an academic presentation?

Thread Image One missed opportunity I see all the time in academic talks is the opening.

The first few mins of your talk are a killer chance for you to ensure the rest of the presentation goes well.

How to practice a presentation

This is a key part of presentation prep, but most people don’t know how to do it well.

Luckily I've been teaching this for 10yrs... here are my thoughts 👇 People either learn a script by heart - which can result in a flat, robot like delivery, or they loudly declare ‘I don’t need to practice’ which more often than not results in a bad un thought through talk - no one wants that.

1. The Journey
2. The Mystery
3. The Conflict

These 3 frames drive curiosity which will make people want to listen to your talk.

#AcademicChatter #ResearchTalks #ECRChat 1. The Journey

Great for talking about how a project went, reporting or chronological storytelling.

The curiosity driver here is - what we've done/happens next?

You've got to know why you are doing the talk.

How to build slide decks fast. ⚡

Building slides so often kills time!

Here’s my guide to making endless reusable slides to help you build quickly🧵

#AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter #ResearchTalks #PHDChat #ECRChat 🤔Stop thinking about the presentation as 1 long 10 minute thing.

Big talks, are made of smaller bits of content, things you say in every talk.

These are content chunks.

• That introduction you always do
• That key finding
• the story you always tell
• the method you used
