UK has “great potential” but struggles eg GDP/capita

“Fix the foundations” is the current govt trope overall

“Help us achieve ambition of ‘only connect’”

Some recommendations for telecoms & innovation:

- Don’t get hung up on specific network techs like 5G or fibre. There’s a wide range & a mix is good
- Be wary of numerical targets that are easy but not meaningful
- … 🧵 - AI it’s important & shiny but don’t ignore connectivity & semiconductors
- Don’t just listen to big companies or their lobby groups. Tech diversity of size & specialism is key
- Infra sharing everywhere - wholesale networks for mobile & fibre, spectrum-sharing, datacentres etc

Curious to see the balance of “the metaverse” vs “a metaverse” in discussion and presentations (A bit of history - I wrote one of the first ever market research reports on #VR #VirtualReality in about 1995, when I was working at UK analyst firm Datamonitor. It was published by FT Managerment Reports. Wish I could find a copy to look at my predictions again)

Sessions today are about green networks & sustainability

Solemn introductions by Guy & Antia Doehler of NGMN commemorating yesterday's sad loss of the Queen @NGMN_Alliance @guydaniels @TelecomTV First speaker is @martineaus , a #COP26 adviser on sustainability, setting wider global & societal context for the telecom industry.

Notes GSMA stats (31% more traffic, 5%+ electricity, 2%+ CO2 in 2021) show that they are "decoupled". But notes that last number must fall

Already bumped into @Gabeuk & @keithdyer at #NGMNICE22 …. Anyone else here that I know? No #5G roaming for @VodafoneUK subs in France

#NGMNICE22 venue gets two bars of 4G signal, but at least the WiFi is decently fast at about 60Mbps & 7ms latency (even through a VPN)

Curious to hear about experience with 5G / OpenRAN in domestic Japan market, as well as global traction with the Symphony platform My initial takeout is that the Japan market seems to treat telecoms as "just another service" alongside the various other Rakuten offers in banking, commerce, gaming etc. Lot of discussion about how many people take 2+ services overall

- I don't buy this idea today's rule change "delays 5G by 2-3 yrs"
- My sense is it allows the industry (& some in govt) to quietly back away from 5G's cult-like hype with a good excuse
- Many I speak to hadn't realised the cool "vision" stuff was always 2023+ anyway

Hmm @bt_uk Chief Strategy Office Michael Sherman kicking off @TheTelcoDebate #GTD19 with what sounds like a 1990s-era rant about Internet services / apps not being "free" & that pricing should reflect more than just Internet access

Sounds like a cliched telcos vs OTT trope @bt_uk @TheTelcoDebate "We've given away huge amounts of value"
"You used to pay for an email account"
"We have to invest ever more in infrastructure"

Well, if you'd diverted some of that investment to internal R&D & app/service development, maybe you'd have captured more value, Mr Sherman? #GTD19
