A layer 2 is a secondary network/protocol built on top of an existing blockchain.

The main goal of the layer 2 is to offload processing from the base chain. Image 2/ There are 3 major types of layer-2 scaling:

- State channels
- Plasma
- Rollups

Each have their own strengths and weaknesses.

The most practical type is the rollup. Let's have a closer look.
