We are happy to release the first results of a RCT of a US program that provided $1,000/month unconditionally for 3 years to 1,000 individuals in the treatment group, with a group of 2,000 people receiving $50/month serving as the control.

These are sizable transfers. 1/ 🧵 Image The program targeted individuals aged 21-40 living in low-income households. One might expect younger people to change their trajectories more in response to cash transfers because they have more life ahead of them and they are less likely to have savings at baseline. 2/

This was surprising to me. 🧵 1/ I can believe people may not want to do long-run follow-ups because, say, they would have tenure by then.

Or, if looking at other people's work instead of their own, the original authors may not want to share data or be grumbly about any null long-run results.... 2/

Some people need ideas, some people need more structured advice. But either way starter projects sound good.

Regarding "ideas": 1/n Sometimes I see lists of research ideas in the economics/effective altruism space posted publicly for anyone to take on.

It's challenging due to adverse selection; someone else's idea may be a poor fit; and ideally one would work on a topic one's advisor could advise on. 2/n

Yikes. The World Bank's Doing Business Report was engaging in specification searching, encouraged by those at very high levels, to boost or reduce certain countries' scores.
